“dodgy area, dark corridors and trash from previous guests!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 February 2009

We stayed in Hotel Acapulco on our first day in Panama City and my husband insisted on changing hotel after we walked around in the area. The hotel itself is not very modern and I disliked the room because we found so much rubbish from the previous guests in the bathroom and in the bedroom, too! The receptionists did not speak English very well but luckily there was no difficulty in communicating with them. The corridor on our floor was not well-lit and i saw some strange people staying there who looked like drug-dealers. I was glad when we left the next morning because I felt rather uncomfortable at this hotel.

“Bad experience”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2009

We booked this hotel at the last minute, in rather a panic, as everywhere else seemed to be full. We had actually read the previous review about the dodgy area, but decided that we´d just bite the bullet and use taxis.

We phoned the day before and were told the price of the room was 38 dollars. We confirmed the booking and told the receptionist we would be arriving late afternoon.

When we arrived at 4pm, we were told that the room would cost 45 dollars. On querying this, we were told that it was the only room left and was more expensive because it had a balcony. We looked at the room, and found that in fact, the balcony is a negative feature if anything, as it looks out onto a busy road, filled with bars. I thought this was a pretty dirty trick to play, considering that we had a booking, and by arriving late afternoon had little choice.

It was difficult to find somewhere else to stay at such short notice, but we did in fact find a better room in the same street for the same price. We moved the following day as the area is not attractive - it´s busy, but I wouldn´t feel safe walking around after dark and yes, there are prostitutes around.

  • Liked — That we didn´t have to stay there!
  • Disliked — Being lied to by the receptionist

“Be Careful!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2009

Ok, You really need to be careful if you choose to stay at this hotel! The reviews led me to believe that it was a great place and a great deal. It's a great deal if you don't consider danger and prostitutes to be a problem.
My taxi driver warned us not to walk around the area when he dropped us off at Hotel Acapulco. We checked in and our room was fine enough. Relatively clean. Then later, we walked outside the hotel and went to check out what food places were on the block.. A nice Caribbean lady stopped me and said in Spanish "No, do not walk anywhere! Much danger!" She told us only to go to the 24 hour diner below the hotel and that was it. So we did that.
And at 2 am I got a phone call in my room from a man speaking spanish, looking for a woman, and asking what time we finish. I didn't understand what it meant, but it kept me up all night, realizing that my room was on the 2nd floor and the balcony overlooked the street which understandably was sketchy.
I told the staff the next morning, and the woman working seemed to think it was sorta funny, but seemed a bit concerned too.
We switched hotels, and our taxi driver told us that Hotel Acapulco is the hotel for "Prosti".

“safe, cheap and clean”

Great place...
Central.
Would stay again.
Little bar on the street next door was handy, too.
Grocery store two blocks away.
