My fiance is Nicaraguan and we have been looking for places to have our wedding reception. We saw pictures of La Abuela and thought it would be perfect so we went to the resort to check it out.
While the place is very pretty, the service was absolutely awful. We ordered some fruit juices and some tostones con queso. 45 minutes later the tostones arrive (they should only take about 3 minutes to make, hence being an appetizer). The waiters took forever and were not friendly. After asking for the check we were told that we had not yet spent the "minimum" which was 100 cords per person (note: this was not stated ANYwhere on the menu). We grudgingly ordered some chicken strips to go.
Before leaving the owner stopped at our table to ask about our experience. We told her we were a bit dissappointed but instead of apologizing she rudely told us that as guests we should take into consideration that there were other people at the restaurant other than ourselves who needed to be served as well. We commented that at Norome (the resort very nearby) there was no minimum spending amount and she replied "then you should have stayed at Norome"!! Wow. Absolutely HORRID service.
If you want to spend a day on the lake, go to Norome or Monkey Hut right down the road!!
