“Poor Service”

My fiance is Nicaraguan and we have been looking for places to have our wedding reception. We saw pictures of La Abuela and thought it would be perfect so we went to the resort to check it out.

While the place is very pretty, the service was absolutely awful. We ordered some fruit juices and some tostones con queso. 45 minutes later the tostones arrive (they should only take about 3 minutes to make, hence being an appetizer). The waiters took forever and were not friendly. After asking for the check we were told that we had not yet spent the "minimum" which was 100 cords per person (note: this was not stated ANYwhere on the menu). We grudgingly ordered some chicken strips to go.

Before leaving the owner stopped at our table to ask about our experience. We told her we were a bit dissappointed but instead of apologizing she rudely told us that as guests we should take into consideration that there were other people at the restaurant other than ourselves who needed to be served as well. We commented that at Norome (the resort very nearby) there was no minimum spending amount and she replied "then you should have stayed at Norome"!! Wow. Absolutely HORRID service.

If you want to spend a day on the lake, go to Norome or Monkey Hut right down the road!!

“Delightful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 March 2008

This small bed and breakfast ([--]) located in Managua, Nicaragua (Villa Fontana) became my center of operations to visit all of Nicaragua. Unlike most bed and breakfast places I have been, I actually enjoyed staying at the Hostal La Abuela because I felt welcomed like family. Also the food and the service was excellent and they have everything modern.

  • Liked — Everything was available
  • Disliked — Must rent a car, public transportation is lousy throughout the country

“Check o price!!!! and the food!!!! and the dining set up!!!! and the service!!”

I wanted a bed and breakfast hostel in Managua, Nicaragua and a friend recommended this location for my stay in September 07.. Frankly I selected it because the price was right. It was not easy to find a bed a breakfast location in Managua since they do not advertise themselves in any manner as far as I can tell. But with that price I figured I could not go wrong. Boy, was I surprised. It was like staying at home. The room was modern, with cable TV, telephone, air condition, hot water shower, laundry, custom self-kitchen, a typical outdoor Nicaragua dining room (I loved it), free internet. And the family environment was fabulous.

The prices in September were:

Per day (+ IVA)
Single room US$ 35.00,
Double......... US$ 45.00
Triple............ US$ 65.00i including breakfast of choice.

This is a small family bed and breakfast so they may not be available all the time. But if you are looking for quality at a low price you cannot go wrong.

  • Liked — The friendliness, the family environment, the food, the price, the service and the cleanliness
  • Disliked — No spa, or swimming pool, however with the volcanic lake Jiloa (Xiloa) 5 minutes away I did not miss it much.
