After a wonderful stay last year, I happily booked a night stay again. Bad decision. The problems started when we arrived at the airport and met the shuttle. We weren't on the list for the shuttle, despite the fact that I booked directly with the hotel and reconfirmed our stay and flight number for the shuttle a few days before. We weren't allowed on the shuttle, and had to wait in an airport waiting room while the guy who met us talked with the hotel. By the time that was done, the shuttle had already left for the hotel, so we had to wait for it to come back. When we got to the hotel, they insisted that my reservation was for the previous night, despite all my documentation to the contrary. They couldn't confirm that my credit card hadn't been charged for the previous night (because they had to confirm with the reservation manager, who would not be in until the next day, despite my printed emails with her where she clearly confirmed the correct day). At one point the manager yelled at me that this was what I deserved for booking through Expedia. When I showed him (again) that I booked directly through the hotel, he stared blankly at me. When we finally got a room it was a tiny shabby little smoking room, and they refused to move us because the non-smoking rooms were apparently only for people with reservations. My perception of the room could have been influenced by the service I received, but it seemed smaller, dirtier, and more dated than I remembered from the previous year. Maybe the smoking floor didn't get the same upgrades as the rest of the hotel? By this time it was 10:30pm, a full two hours after we first tried to board the shuttle, so I gave up and crashed.
The next morning they were only marginally more helpful, and it still took another full 1/2 hour of slightly more pleasant but equally unapologetic conversation with the manager to be sure that I would be charged the proper rate and for only one night, and he acted like he was doing me a big favor at that. No apology, no offer of discount on this or even a future stay, nothing. On top of that, instead of crediting the points for my stay to my current Priority Club account, they went ahead and signed me up for a new one (I'm assuming they get something for doing this, as they automatically signed me up for an account the previous time I stayed there, too). I was happy that I only planned to stay one night at this hotel anyway. What a horrible way to start a vacation.
The only pluses were the breakfast (and even that they didn't tell us about, we stumbled upon it on our own) and the fact that Gerald, one of my favorite taxi drivers anywhere in the world, can still be found there.
