“Decent place, can be fun.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 January 2012

The dorm room was hot but for the price it was quite OK, plus you have the pool! I had a great time there but I can see many inherent flaws. There are two properties, one of them is a 5 min walk from the main house.

Pros:
-Swimming Pool! The poolside area is great for relaxing in the hammocks or having drinks with fellow travellers.
-Barbecue Grill and Kitchen access.
-Convenient Location, near the Metrocentro Mall and La Union Supermarket, and many street food stalls a 10 min walk away.
-Nice DVD collection for whiling away time.

Cons:
- Only ONE common shower
- Mosquitoes! You need repellent indoors too.
- The staff (although usually nice enough) are occasionally inexplicably hostile.

Tip: Take their warnings seriously about where to walk and where not. Don't take the shortcut to the supermarket. Go the long way.

Hi, I'm glad to hear you mostly enjoyed your stay at the hostel, i.e. the amenities and services, etc.
We do take pride in offering those services that travelers enjoy at the best possible price.

In terms of the negatives you mentioned:
-Only one common shower: Since you've stayed here we've added another shower by the pool for guests to use when they are entering/exiting the pool. This will hopefully open up the availability in the shared bathroom that you are referring to.
-Mosquitoes: Unfortunately this is a problem during the wet season throughout all of Nicaragua. When water collects in puddles and other areas, mosquitoes get a chance to breed. We try our best to control any standing water on the properties and fumigate regularly, however, its impossible to control the standing water in our neighbors yards and occasionally we get the mosquitoes from them. We'll keep doing our best to control the mosquitoes where we can, but a bit of spray may be helpful if your sensitive to the bites.
-Staff nice but occasionally hostile: Not sure what happened there, but our staff are taught to always be helpful and courteous to guests. Hopefully this was an isolated case.
Thanks for your comments.

“Great location but staff with an attitude”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 November 2011

We booked one room with an ensuite bathroom at this place just because of its location (we were taking an early bus from Managua to San José with Transnica and this was the most affordable accommodation we could find close to the bus station).

When we got to the place, we walked into a small room close to the main room and we saw a guy sitting by a small take and using a computer whilst talking to another lad. Nobody said anything to us and we supposed they were guests.

We kept on walking around the place and we finally found a woman wearing a Managua Backpackers Inn T-shirt and she told us that the guy with the computer was supposed to be the receptionist (If you see someone coming into the hostel with two suitcases, and you're supposed to work there, the least thing you can do it's saying 'hi, I'll be with you in a sec').

The same guy had some problems with our reservation too. He informed us that there were two different reservations with our names. We told him that we sent them an e-mail asking for a room but, since we didn't get any answer from them, we decided to book a room with hostelbookers. He didn't seem to understand that and he kept on asking why there were two reservations... If we didn't get any answer from them, how were we supposed to know that the reservation had been made?

After checking in, he took us to our room. One of the beds had been used and he told us that someone would come to clean it up... We are still waiting! The sheets of that bed were never changed, the bathroom was never cleaned and the trash bin wasn't emptied.

That guy has an attitude! Fortunately, another girl came for the evening shift and she was much more helpful. She gave us directions to get to the closest supermarket (La Unión) and she helped us to use the kitchen.

“Stay elsewhere!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 October 2011

My husband and I stayed at Backpackers Inn on the last night of our honeymoon, because we had an early flight home the next morning. We've stayed at plenty of cheap hostels in Central and South America, and this was the most disappointing. It simply did not live up to the expectations we had, from reading the website. Firstly, we were at a different property, on the next street over, and the air-conditioning only comes on after 9:00 (to be fair, it does state this on their website). However, we still had to go and ask for the AC to be turned on after 9:00. The rooms are stifling hot, there's ants everywhere, and the shower was ironically too hot to use (no separate tap for cold water). Although the website said we would have access to a kitchen, it was located at a different property, which is not much good when you buy breakfast you'd like to be able to grab when you leave at 5:00am, and you're advised not to walk around after dark. Also the website said both properties have English-speaking staff, however ours didn't, which can become a real problem when your airport shuttle does not show up and you need to inquire about it. A few other small things - they sell beer, but it's kept in a fridge that's not turned on, and the guy who checked us in at reception was extremely rude. The biggest mistake we made however, was reserving their airport shuttle. It costs a bit more than a taxi does, but we thought it would be worth it to be sure our ride was there on time. You have to pay the day before, and after our driver was about an hour late, the staff would still not refund our money. We absolutely could not miss our flight, so we were going to just go find our own taxi, but the staff advised us it was too dangerous for us to walk out at night. This was a horribly stressful situation, and we did not even get as much as an apology from staff, let a lone a refund for the shuttle. Save yourself the hassle, pay a little extra, and stay somewhere else.

“Suitable for Managua”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 July 2011

We had a private double room with bath and air conditioning and cable TV. The TV is very small but worked well with good selection. There is free WiFI, very reliable and fast. There is a shared kitchen on site and a pool. The pool is well maintained and pleasant. The staff is very helpful and friendly. They have two buildings, one has a cafe open in the mornings with a nice breakfast selction (not included in the price). The Inn is located near a very modern shopping mall, Metro Centro. The Inn is a decent value. Otherwise, we didn't find much to like about Managua.
