“Stay elsewhere!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 October 2011

My husband and I stayed at Backpackers Inn on the last night of our honeymoon, because we had an early flight home the next morning. We've stayed at plenty of cheap hostels in Central and South America, and this was the most disappointing. It simply did not live up to the expectations we had, from reading the website. Firstly, we were at a different property, on the next street over, and the air-conditioning only comes on after 9:00 (to be fair, it does state this on their website). However, we still had to go and ask for the AC to be turned on after 9:00. The rooms are stifling hot, there's ants everywhere, and the shower was ironically too hot to use (no separate tap for cold water). Although the website said we would have access to a kitchen, it was located at a different property, which is not much good when you buy breakfast you'd like to be able to grab when you leave at 5:00am, and you're advised not to walk around after dark. Also the website said both properties have English-speaking staff, however ours didn't, which can become a real problem when your airport shuttle does not show up and you need to inquire about it. A few other small things - they sell beer, but it's kept in a fridge that's not turned on, and the guy who checked us in at reception was extremely rude. The biggest mistake we made however, was reserving their airport shuttle. It costs a bit more than a taxi does, but we thought it would be worth it to be sure our ride was there on time. You have to pay the day before, and after our driver was about an hour late, the staff would still not refund our money. We absolutely could not miss our flight, so we were going to just go find our own taxi, but the staff advised us it was too dangerous for us to walk out at night. This was a horribly stressful situation, and we did not even get as much as an apology from staff, let a lone a refund for the shuttle. Save yourself the hassle, pay a little extra, and stay somewhere else.

“Suitable for Managua”

We had a private double room with bath and air conditioning and cable TV. The TV is very small but worked well with good selection. There is free WiFI, very reliable and fast. There is a shared kitchen on site and a pool. The pool is well maintained and pleasant. The staff is very helpful and friendly. They have two buildings, one has a cafe open in the mornings with a nice breakfast selction (not included in the price). The Inn is located near a very modern shopping mall, Metro Centro. The Inn is a decent value. Otherwise, we didn't find much to like about Managua.

“Rude service drove us away, despite our reservation”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 July 2011

We had reservations for two nights. I arrived a few hours before my friend was due to arrive, so I tried to check in. Unforturnately my physical passport was at the embassy and they said the copy of my passport wasn't acceptable to check in. They said I would have to return and check in with my friend's passport. And despite the fact that my name was on the reservation, they wouldn't even allow me to wait for my friend to arrive. I was very rudely told to leave the property.

I asked to speak to the owner but the manager, Filipe, refused to give me his phone number. I was kicked out despite having a reservation!! And in a neighborhood that, if you read some of the following reviews, is not known to be very safe.

I asked the manager where I could go and he basically said, anywhere but here.

I know this sounds hard to believe, but after talking to other travelers (I live in the country and work with visitors), I have found that the management is notorious for this kind of treatment.

Luckily there are other options available that are more convenient, less expensive and with friendlier staff.

My advice is, skip this hostel and visit the Marta Quezada neighborhood. Much better options there.

“Be very careful- I got robbed around the corner of the hostel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2011 via mobile

We stayed here for one night at the second property. The room itself was ok, but although the rough guide said that it was a safe neighbourhood- I disagree. I felt very unsafe. The street is quiet and deserted and a group of 5 teenagers approached myself and my boyfriend and ripped my necklace off me. Luckily we were not hurt, but it was a very scary situation at 8 am on a Sunday morning.
This happened 2 minute walk outside pollo campero- whatever you do, do not turn left when you leave the hostel gate.
The staff should also be aware and warn you. We asked them to call us a taxi and she said to walk and get one right where I was robbed!
I would go elsewhere and regret going there for one night

“Inconvenient and proud of it!!!”

If you didn't make a reservation, or did and they didn't hold it for you, they will put you in the overflow room across the street, but to get to it you must walk around the block. The overflow house sleeps 8 and has no shared kitchen, or secure storage for your bags. A night costs a ridiculous 10 USD per person. Bring your bug spray because the mosquitoes and red ants are in full force here. The night receptionist seemed elated each time I questioned the layout. "So I have to walk all the way around instead of going through that gate right there?" I asked. She looked at me and was almost able to keep a straight face when saying, "That's right." They have a concrete swamp, which someone told me was a swimming pool.
