“Absolutely appalling experience”

I would like to warn people to stay away from this hotel and not to repeat my mistake. I stayed in this hotel in July 2011. The room I got was tiny and extremely hot. So hot that there was no air to breathe. Bed was small. Floor was dirty.
The toilet on the ground floor was so disgusting and there was no paper at all. When I came to the reception and ask for some paper they replied that it happens all the time and they can't help me.
Breakfast .... I have nothing to say. I have never seen such a breakfast buffet in my whole life. It looked disgusting. So if there is possibility to stay away from paying breakfast, do not hesitate to do it.
Every time when I went to my room I was checked for keys and that is really annoying. Try to look for smth other options coz hotel is not worth money you pay.
Regards

Dear Victoria R.

We thank you a lot for your review. We would be happy to have it received earlier for you speak of your experience in our hotel which is 7 months old.
Nevertheless we must admit that the tiny room you had was an economy single room for 60 dollars. It doesn't have air conditionning and that is not hidden by the hotel. Every Internet source that books our hotel outlines this information. If you walked in to the hotel we always warn clients and propose them to see the room. Besides one can always change the room after having seen it - we accept that and even propose a free upgrade for unsutisfied clients if we have rooms.
We do not hide that some rooms are shabby and that's why we called the "economy". But we are always open to resolve guests' problems if they communicate us any.
The toilet on the ground floor is not really for hotel guests. We have a lot of restaurants, cafes airline and train tiket desks, boutiques and shops on the ground floor. So that toilet has an important flow of visitors and it could happen that there was no paper. On the other hand hotel guests after the breakfast may visit our restaurant toilets just nearby on the 1st floor. There is no reason to go downstairs.
For the brakfast it could be true for July 2011, though it seems like you were late for breakfast. Here is a quotation from a december stay which reflects perfectly the real situation: "What was surprisingly good was the ample breakfast buffet (included) in the complex' restaurant (a bit difficult to find though)."
To finish with that response we would like to say that we try to be a low cost 3* hotel just 10 minites away from the center. But one must always be ready that a room for 60 dollars is just a room for 60 dollars.
Thank you.

“Affordable hotel with lots of facilities nearby, but do not expect luxury”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 December 2011 via mobile

You will find Turist Hotel in a neighbourhood full of precast concrete buildings built in the soviet era. It stands tall with 25 floors, about 7 kilometres away from the city centre on the east side of the Dnjepr river. A subway station, bus stops, shops, pubs and restaurants and a travel agent are in the immediate vicinity.
Check-in went surprisingly smooth and efficient, the lobby staff even had a smile or two to spare! Accepted means of payment are Cash (hrivna only!) and credit cards.
The rooms are a bit outdated, the tv set only shows Ukrainian/ Russian channels. What's really letting the hotel down is the state of the bathroom: lots of cracked tiles, mildew, the mirror was half- blind, they toilet bowl wasn't screwed to the floor. The bath tub was way too small (I am 6'2") but frankly, the whole room wasn't very inviting to stay longer than necessary.
What was surprisingly good was the ample breakfast buffet (included) in the complex' restaurant (a bit difficult to find though).
All in all, I wouldn't want to stay there for longer, however if you're looking for affordable accommodation for one or two nights, Turist Hotel isn't the worst of choices.

Dear Dirk 0602. Thank you for the review. We have nothing to add or disagree. The comments on the bathroom are correct for economy room bathroom. Standard rooms have better facilities and enjoy a splendid panoramic view.
The breakfast is really good for 3* hotel. Though it's served on the 1st floor it can only be accessed through the ground floor.
Thank you once more and be welcome again!

“Wouldn't let my dog stay here !”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2011

The good: McDonalds & Irish bar w/decent food across the street, supermarket & metro 2 blocks away (downtown is 4 stops away on metro, 15 minutes - costs equivalent $ 0.25/ea way)

The bad: bed size fit for a dog, as comfortable as laying on a bed of rocks, need microscope for the tiny tv, every channel (about 50) is 100% Ukrainian dubbed), the paid internet card konks out every 15 minutes, 2 guards inside the hotel look like untrained ex-KGB - they're waiting for a terrorist attack it seems - they just sit there, stare you down & check your keys before letting you through to elevator.

The ugly: buffet breakfast one of the absolute worst on the planet, am pretty sure something like this would be shut down even in Mexico ... no telling what is in the meat, the 'scrambled eggs' definitely did not taste like or look a normal scrambled egg, OJ is made of 95% water, dining hall feels like a prison, if you want to play Russian roulette & try breakfast, I suggest you stick with the bread and vegetables.

Tip - for an extra $ 50/night stay in a nice hotel downtown Kiev, you'll be happy you did !

If you have an extra day to spend, I recommend taking the Chernobyl tour - book with New Logic... they pick up you in downtown Kiev 9am, return 6pm

Room Tip: All rooms are likely to be equally crappy

Dear ZTraveller88, we as the management team of Hotel Tourist are very sorry our hotel left you so much unsatisfied. We have done really much since May 2011 we came to the hotel and the buffet type breakfast was a real step forward international travellers. Surely a moderate cost hotel as Tourist Hotel is can't afford to propose fresh juices or natural coffee on breakfast. We really try to do our best for the breakfast out of the paid tariff. Nevertheless we do propose fresh vegetables, fruits, fish, yohuorts, toasts, meats, ommelette, cakes and drinks. Probably the products do not look like you are used they should look like, but it's nobody's fault.
Concerning the channels we must admit that there're no international channels. We are working on that issue and thank you for highlighting the problem.
As for the bed size, you were in a single room which has a single bed. Unfortunately single beds as a common practice for CIS countries hotels have 1meter per 1.9 meters size. This is an open information available on our official web site and even on hotel's page picture on TripAdvisor.
The security guys are there to assure our guests safety. They are ready for any kind of incident and may ask a visitor for his key if they have a suspicion the person is not or doesn't look like hotel's guest.
We really thank you for your review for it will help us develop. To finish we would like to say that a visit to Chernobyl is not a sane idea and we wouldn't reccommend it to our guests, but we do respect your interests and values.

“I knew what to expect... And I got it”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 July 2011

Needing to stay just a single night in Kiev (actually, just a few hours as the train was so late from Kharkiv) , whilst waiting for a flight to Moscow, I was looking for somewhere cheap just to bed down for the night. Whilst this was only actually relatively cheap, given the cost of Kiev hotels, it fitted the bill.

The hotel is situated next to a Metro station, on the line towards the Hydropark and it's pretty easy to find.

Upon arrival (late - past 11pm) we found the reception deserted and dark - and had to wait until a receptionist appeared. After this, checking in was easy enough and we were dispatched up to collect out keys from the floor attendant - which was fairly painless.

The rooms were clean - but very dated. Old beds, old furniture and generally quite shabby - but given the cost and previous experience of former Soviet hotels, I was expecting this. The bathroom had been renovated to an extent, and the shower in the morning was nice and warm.

The breakfast was very basic - little in the way of choice, served by some fairly uninterested looking staff and not all that appitising really. I would probably recommend going to the McDonalds just over the road instead!

The area around the hotel has a number of shops and a couple of bars. I would advise avoiding the Irish place just over the road though as it is outrageously expensive and if you look around the area near the Metro / McDonalds there are a couple of small bar / cafes which are decent, open till the early hours and don't cost the earth.

Overall - not fantastic - but not a complete dive either. I would echo the sentiments of a previous reviewer "OK for a couple of nights on business but not for taking your missus to on a weekend away!"

“Budget hotel in Kiev close to exhibition center”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 February 2011

This is a traditional hotel very close to the exhibition center and right next to the train station. trains go straight into the heart of downtown kiev. very basic breakfast served and anything extra asked for is chargeable including ketchup. staff is not very well versed with english so be ready for some communication issues. overall this place wins only because of location. lot to do right outside the hotel in the evening. also close to mcdonalds (right across the street). hotel has a bar, casino and also a strip club.
