I enjoyed staying at the Hotel Sport. A good-ish location, decent value for money, and a bit of a "blast from the past" experience. I booked directly off the hotel's website which had a fast and competent response. I had asked for a room on the highest floors available and was given one on the 16th floor - this offered good views across Kiev (at this stage most of the view is of construction being done for the Euro 2012 football tournament - the hotel is next door to the national stadium). The hotel is clean and safe and and well maintained and well run. Management have made a good effort in the relatively simple facilities available to them. The rooms are basic but very adequate. Mine had a huge refrigerator and balcony. Very good rates (530 UAH (about $65) per night for a single room) and particularly compared to what's on offer elsewhere in Kiev. The location is very convenient - about 3 minutes from the metro and about 25 minutes' walking to the center. The staff are somewhat grumpy (the hotel is managed by the ministry of sport and tourism ..) and they would do well to find someone who smiled at the front door (rather than the security guy who glares at everyone). However, frankly, a little bit of service surliness is all part of "the Ukraine experience". There's a restaurant on the top floor and many eating options at all price levels within a few minutes from the hotel. Also a couple of big supermarkets very nearby. The hotel is also on the "right" side of Kiev when it comes to leaving to go to the airport so this is an added convenience.
