After living and working in Kiev for several years, I've seen my fair share of hotels.
Hotel Sport was an excellent location - right across from Ani Restaurant which is one of the best places for a meal in Kiev! The metro was just in front of the hotel, which made it easy to get downtown.
The sports arena is right behind the hotel, so it's the perfect location if you want to see a soccer game. This hotel is the location for all the sports teams who travel to Kiev. We ran into everyone from soccer, to basketball, Americans and from all over the CIS. It was very entertaining to watch the bball players duck into the elevators.
There are two restaurants available. The top floor hosts the morning breakfast buffet which seemed decent enough, and had a good variety of food from day to day which is rare in many of the Kiev hotels. Breakfast is not necessarily included in the price of your room, so you have to make sure to negotiate that and they will give you breakfast tickets for it.
The other retaurant is on the 4th floor and is open pretty late. We ate here for a quick meal a few times, and it's a great space for a group dinner.
Overall the staff was helpful, they do not speak English very well, so make sure you've brushed up on your Russian. Most of the hotel guests are sports teams from the CIS or Ukraine, so they don't have many English speaking guests.
Not a bad place to stay, the rooms were clean and decent. We watched BBC News until we just couldn't stand the looping programs any longer, staff is nice, but you'll have to track down the chamber maids if you want extra towels or toilet paper -- good luck with that!
