They have rooms of different standards. If you pay more, you get closer to european standard, if you pay the cheapest price, you get the old soviet standard. I have stayed many times and I always go for the cheapest room.
There is a fridge, tv in the room, but the radiators are not very efficient.
Just around the corner, there is a big supermarket, 100m, and whenever I stay, I go and do some shopping, buy eggs, fruit, water, cakes, and I travel with a little travel kettle, which I use to boil the eggs, make a cup of tea, etc...
If you are prepared, then you can have a comfortable stay.
Just around the corner, take almost any bus, and in five minutes you get to the underground metro and mcdonalds, where I normally eat during the day.

I was afraid to stay here after reading the scathing reviews. In fact, knowing what to expect, it turned out to be not so bad at all.

We stayed five nights in late September and took the unrenovated room for $50/night (for two people) which was less than half of anything else we could find in Kiev. We looked at a very basic B&B in a more central location for $120/night. I thought it must be a joke but it wasn't.

Yes, the room was as basic as you could imagine, but it was clean. I can honestly say the bathroom fixtures were ancient, including the tilework around the bathtub. I had flashbacks of some of the budget hotels I'd stayed in back in the 70s in western Europe. And the Sovietski atmosphere? Well, I find it fascinating while I understand many others do not.

Two huges issues which everybody mentions: 1) No air conditioning in the unrenovated rooms. You'd need an upgraded room with a/c in the hot Kiev summer. 2) The location: I liked the neighborhood but the metro stop - Liboverezhna - was a good 25 minutes walk...further than it looked on the map. (Hint: as you walk north towards the metro, the signs stop about half way there. You'll think you've passed it but no, cross to the left side of the street and it's hidden behind the building complex, just past the hotel Turist.)

The neighborhood is mostly residential (drab Soviet concrete blocks) but has several good restaurants and cafes which you'll see as you walk to the metro. Also a large grocery store just a block around the corner and many banks/ATMs and more restaurants - even an Irish pub - further north right before the Liboverezhna metro stop. Oddly I found the prices in these nice cafes and restaurants to be about the same as what you'd pay in central Kiev. Still, you couldn't beat the convenience of the location.

I never ventured into any of the hotel restaurants or bars. All in all, the Slavutich was fine. But if you're the fussy type, better look elsewhere.

You get an unrenovated room for about $35 which is not bad value for money. About 15 mins walk to the nearest metro station. Fantastic Italian restaurant just by the side of the hotel, but equally wonderful Korean restaurant inside.

Hotelroom carpet must be the paradise for all small creatures of Kiev. No airco in the room.
Bed and coverage are to small. Breakfastmenu is still the same as in Soviet times.
