“keep your expectations modest and you won't be disappointed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

The Dnipro Hotel is faded and joyless, the staff are surly, the rooms are small and threadbare, the hallways dark, and during my four-day stay the 'Panorama Restaurant' on the top floor was closed every evening for a "private function." On the plus side: it's cheap, it's clean, the location is excellent, and it's a fairly authentic taste of what things were like during the Soviet era.

If you want a cookie-cutter Western hotel, an Intercontinental and a Marriott are both few blocks away. But if you have a tolerance for irony and want a glimpse of the past, I have no hesitation in recommending the Dnipro. I went with fairly modest expectations - and I wasn't disappointed.

“You will be sadly disappointed it is not worth any money let alone $180 per night.”

I have stayed all over Europe western & eastern. This has to be by far the most disappointing hotel I have stayed in. Granted it's not awful, it's location is good, well excellent but the cost of the hotel is frankly obscene. I had read the reviews, was aware of the rooms being substandard especially if un-renovated so I opted for a 'Junior Suite'. Our bed was barely a double, the duvet still didn't reach either side of the mattress. The room had not been renovated in years. Old wood, old bed, carpets tiny bathroom, water came out of the taps a muddy brown colour at first, after running just a matter of seconds though water was clear. The room temperature was 90c, the 1980's thermometer in the room told us so. Despite it being -11 outside we had to sleep with the windows open. Despite repeated requests for first the heating to be turned down or off and then a room change we were still left in our oven like room. One of the reasons we chose the dnipro was it's leisure facilities, well frankly they were as disapointing as the rooms. The pool was no more than 6m long. Very well photographed. Facilities were only available till 12.00pm and an £8.00 per person charge after mid day. Staff were helpful, although my girlfriend popped out for a coffee in the morning, 10am ish and was locked out of the lift as our room keys had been turned off as "we were expected to check out" check out time was mid day. She was feeling a little delicate after a Saturday night out and was made to feel very uncomfortable. I asked for a late check till 1pm. I was quoted 50% of the room fee, circa £65.00. All in all despite the hotel Kiev is a wonderful City and it's worth spending the extra money and staying in the real top hotels, or renting a luxury apartment. My review is based on the price I paid. The room and especially the beds were no better than your average guest house.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else.

“I really hate to give negative reviews of hotels, but...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

Unfortunately there really is little to recommend at the Dnipro. The decor is crumbling, the bed was one of the most uncomfortable I've ever slept in, even the curtains were a metre narrower than the window, allowing light to flood into the room from the giant illuminated billboard outside. Trash collection took place at 2am each morning creating so much noise that I though construction work was taking place. TV channels were all local, and the pay-per-view movies were expensive and out of date, but that's about all you can expect for entertainment as you'll give up on the wifi after about 5 minutes. If you're travelling with a laptop make sure you take a few dvds with you!

On the plus side, the room was clean, and I can recommend the sausage and chips from the London Pub next door (turn right, not left, or you'll find yourself in the strip club!). Also, if you're travelling for football, Dynamo Kiev's stadium is right across the road (this is NOT a venue for Euro 2012 though). I believe the hotel is undergoing refurbishment but currently this only seems to apply to the expensive rooms (which are the ones pictured here). If you're staying in the budget rooms, it's not a particularly great experience, I'm afraid.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the refurbished rooms, although these are the more expensive ones.

“DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE!”

The hotel claims to be a 4 star but when compared to another Ukrainian 4 star like Oreanda in Yalta, this hotel pales. Receptionists are rude to the point of arrogance. We stayed at a 'premier executive suite' where the TV didn't work nor was it fixed when we advised reception. The second time around (location is admittedly hard to beat), we stayed in two single economy rooms. Body fluid stains on bedding and carpeting (ew!). Bed so hard you may as well sleep on the ugly hardwood floor. Oh and hotel guests have to pay to use the 'wellness center' after 12:pm.

Kreshyatik and even the Ukraina hotels are similarly priced with better quality rooms and customer service.
