Stayed for 2 nights during a business trip.
The hotel was nice and the staff spoke excellent english.
A little far from the city center (and uphill)
There is no question about one thing. The location of this hotel is fantastic and will give you a completely different experience of the city from just about anywhere else. This is perfect, if like me your stay will be short. Just down the historic St. Andrews hill, between the Rastrelli designed church (under repair at Nov '10) and the excellent Bulgakov museum. Ladies should put away their high heels if they stay here, given the cobbled street that runs downhill, but this is one of its many charms. Other things are more problematic: small rooms, short beds and a most intriguing breakfast selection that includes roast vegetables and savoury rice, depending, I guess, on the mood of the chef. The staff are quite sweet, but the organising principles are a bit slack: heavy looking security, but no one to help if you are struggling with bags, nice little evening tea at 6, but set up in a way that looks awkward to get involved with. Had to take the battery out of the wall clock in my room as it was too noisy, and dealing with the reverse-installed taps in the shower reflects a lack of attention to detail. For a small hotel, this means everything, however if you visit, don't forget to make it to the terraced garden.
Close to St Andrew's church, this hotel suprised me in many ways. Although sceptical upfront, booked from Prague and needing pre-payment to book, staff is very friendly, breakfast great, and the longer I am here - the more I like it.
I am impressed by the restaurant, although looking a bit 'faux', the food quality is good. The salmon in mustard marinade is stunning, as is the herring.
Wifi is wobbely, ask for a network cable - after this you are well connected.
I really like this place!
Hotel has super nice and calm location, but service is really terrible. In the hotel, in the restaurant, everywhere. Looks and feels like you are still in the Soviet Union. And waiters and administration give you a big favour to give the service for what you pay a lot.
