The Balkan Hotel sits smack in the middle of Belgrade and boasts a 4 star rating. It certainly lives up to it with all the facilities and location required for such an establishment. But only just- it is a little tired around the edges but this is not a big problem.
It’s not the most modern feeling but it’s cosy and comfortable and we had a most pleasant two night stay as part of a long weekend visit to Serbia.
Reception staff are multilingual, attentive, professional and very friendly and all it took was a squiggle on the registration card and handing over our passports. Within minutes we had climbed the stairs to the second floor (fear not, a lift is also available in the lobby) and entered our room.
We had a choice of double or single bed as it was a room designed for three people and both beds were firm, large and inviting. Sadly only blanket and sheets but we can’t always have duvets, alas. An abundance of pillows made up for this though.
A large choice of lighting arrangements ensures plenty of options for illumination to suit any moods and all beds had access to a bedside cabinet.
The room offered free wi-fi (pick up a pass code from Reception), a slightly noisy fridge full of drinks and snacks at reasonable prices, air-conditioning, large flat screen TV with many English speaking channels, a wardrobe, writing desk and chair, and plenty of space to store luggage and similar.
The bathroom was on the small side an narrow but the shower was excellent with plenty of hot water every time we tried. Complimentary toiletries, good towels and even a bathrobe concluded the offerings.
Our visit was also half board and both breakfast and dinner were served in the pleasant restaurant/bar on the first floor. Plenty of options for both meals but vegetarians will be limited for choice, although not completely stymied.
We had a great time in the capital of Serbia and The Balkan Hotel contributed to our happy memories in a big way.
NOTE: We came on this trip as part of an organised tour from Slovenia to see a show. Our theatre was quite literally opposite the hotel and it took a few minutes to walk over to it. Location is really excellent.
