Entering the first floor of the building (which appears to be shared with other businesses so perhaps the hotel has little control over it), I thought -- my God, this looks as though it's been decorated by a Greek grandmother who went blind 20 years ago and was recalling the decor of her sighted era! A tacky, weirdly-lit spurting fountain, three different carpet colours going up a spiral staircase -- I thought I had the wrong hotel and went back out to to the street to see if the taxi driver was wrong. I was picturing in my mind the modern-looking photos on the hotel's web site...
Well, good thing I went back as it turned out I needed the taxi driver's muscle. There was NO elevator and I had 2 heavy wheeled suitcases. I realize that, as a North American, I carry around that presumption and forget that a lot of Europe's buildings are older than my country...anyhow, I always forget to ask this question when booking. So, I tipped the driver 5 Euros extra (on top of cab tip) and my bags were happily transported up. (Note: the front desk clerk kindly carried one of my bags down for me the next morning. But, it was a female working there the night I was there and she was no more muscle-laden than I.)
They had run out of maps at the front desk (odd, I thought, and she didn't offer to print me one up with the printer in sight) but she told me a couple of places to go for dinner. I will say that the location of this hotel is superb -- a 5 minute walk away from the main pedestrian/shopping zone. Also, unlimited wireless internet was GREAT!
I was placed in a single room right next to reception. It was very small, but appointed in a modern fashion. The shower was nice, but it was weird that you didn't get mini bottles of shampoo -- it was just a half-used full-size bottle of Dove shampoo (or whatever brand).
While there is the added security of being right next to reception, it was also a bit noisy. The walls were paper-thin. I could hear his chair creaking and when he coughed. At about 2 am, some Balkan music blared (from what I presume to be his computer -- or maybe a cell phone) and woke me up -- and it went on for about 15 seconds but was turned off. I met him in the morning and he was an extremely friendly young man. Not his fault that there isn't much sound-proofing!
Based upon the pictures, I think the rooms seem to vary greatly, so if you have a double or a deluxe room, the noise probably won't be an issue. It's just that mine was right next door to reception. You might want to request a different single room in your booking.
Overall, this is a good place to stay, largely for the great location, superb price, clean and quaint rooms, and free internet. (No breakfast included.) But just be forewarned there is no elevator, the halls are quite narrow, and if you're in the room next to reception, it could be noisy.
Oh -- a previous reviewer said the convenience shop next door is open 24 hours (I think) but it was closed when I got back at about 11 pm.
