I've just had a very nice stay at Villa Marija, and would like to recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone planning to visit Belgrade in the forthcoming months (which is, IMHO, a must-do).
Although not located in the historical centre of Belgrade, Villa Marija is very well connected to it via a bus line which runs frequently and until late at night. It never takes more than 15 mn to get to the beating heart of the city. This location means you can enjoy the bustling activity of Belgrade (more on that below) while staying in a quiet and very pleasant residential area, full of nice villas and tree-lined streets.
Now about Villa Marija itself: as the name indicates it is a (big) house rather than a hotel, run by a young couple which actually lives there. While not being intrusive at all they provide a level of service and dedication which goes far beyond what a standard hotel can offer. After all you are, quite literally, their guest(s). Two examples of this attitude: when I arrived mid-afternoon I asked if I could be served some basic food to fill my empty stomach. The lady kindly cooked me a delicious omelette, without charging me for the service. Second example: there is a minibar in each room, the contents of which (beer, fruit juice, water, chocolate bars) are offered to guests free of charge. Mr Marriott or Mr Sheraton were never that kind with me...
The rooms are large and tastefully decorated. They look fresh and modern. Bathrooms are perfectly equipped and roomy. Some of the rooms have balconies, ask for one if you can (although mine didn't have any and was still absolutely fine). Rooms on the second floor have mansard roofs. They're cosy, but get less light - it's a different atmosphere, which one may or may not like. Just be aware of this when booking.
Breakfast is good and varied. One possible area for improvement (I have to establish my neutrality by making at least one slightly less positive comment): it would be great if freshly squeezed orange juice could be served instead of the standard one which we get. It could be a very nice attention which guests would certainly love! And it seems feasible considering the small scale of the whole affair...
A word on Belgrade itself: it offers a unique, exhilarating urban experience and my stay there was thoroughly enjoyable. A lot of buildings have been renovated in recent years and Belgrade now looks like a modern European city, perfectly at ease with itself. What you will find on top of this is a unique character and level of energy - on a summer night some streets are absolutely packed with crowds of young (and less young) people parading, having drinks on terraces etc. As a Frenchman who's been enjoying urban life in his own country, but also in Spain and Italy, I can say that Belgrade is on par with the best cities in these countries (and it has a secret weapon: its floating bars and clubs - absolutely terrific!).
To summarise, Villa Marija is the perfect place where to stay while visiting this great city which is Belgrade. I can only praise my hosts for their kindness, dedication and for the superb experience which they offer to their guests - I look forward to going back there very soon!
