“You could have a better night's sleep on the train station platform opposite the hotel”

We had arrived at the Gara de Nord train station in the pouring rain having returned our hire car at Baneasa Airport (Bus 780 or 205 direct to the station) and were increasingly becoming drenched looking for the Elizeu. Then, like a glowing beacon to get us into the dry, it appeared and our prayers were answered! From the outside this hotel looks fairly trendy, a nice lobby area etc. The restaurant also serves up palatable food at a very reasonable price.

The rooms at first sight were not bad either, but at the end of the day, a hotel is a place to rest your head for the night.

The Elizeu ultimately failed on this point.

The bedrooms are clearly smoking rooms; which I gather having stayed across Romania that they don't differentiate between smoking and non-smoking rooms. This wasn't too much of an issue. However, three points lead me to rating this hotel as 1 out of 5:

1. Bedding: hard mattresses, tiny pillows and inadequate covers made for an uncomfortable night's sleep, with little we could do.

2. Noise: I had expected noise from the train station, but all of the noise came from inside the hotel. The walls must only be made out of cardboard - you could hear everything, and a huge group of people laughing and joking in the room down the corridor, then slowing making their way out of the corridor at 1am is not what I wanted!

3. Breakfast: Quite simply the worst hotel breakfast I have ever experienced (and I consider myself a connoisseur of hotel breakfasts). There were about 2 measly bits of greasy sausage in a huge tray, cold excuses for fried eggs, and what can only be described as left over salads and dishes thrown together from the previous night's restaurant servings. The only thing we could stomach was toast. The woman working in the restaurant during breakfast was rude, obnoxious, and seemed annoyed when asked any questions.

The service on the front desk however was good, they looked after our bags whilst we ventured into Bucharest, and were happy for us to use the facilities before we departed for the airport. However, I would NEVER stay at this hotel again, nor recommend it, you could have a better night's sleep on the platform at the train station opposite

“basic”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2009

Come here if you are on a budget and need to be close to Gare Nord. The room was clean and there is a restaurant where the food is acceptable.staff were friendly. We found the place a bit too basic and the area was not very pleasant.

“Great hotel when travelling by train”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 July 2009

Pros:
-Location: you can see the train station (gara Nord), just less than 5 minutes walk, saves you an ripoff taxi to the downtown
-Size of the rooms: we stayed with 3 in a large room
-Good selection of breakfast

Cons:
-it's not in the downtown area, however you can take a short subway ride to the downtown

“Nice, comfortable, good food & close to main train station.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 April 2009

We arrived late into Bucharest and the staff were very welcoming and helpful, making sure that we got down to their restaurant for dinner in good time to feed the kids after we took our luggage to the room, which was very clean and inviting. The restaurant food was also of good value, quite nice, generous helpings for weary travellers.

We were checking out the next morning and thanks to THE most unhelpful information counter person I've ever met, we missed our train to Brasov and had to wait 4 hours for the next one, so we went back to the hotel, explained the situation, and they very kindly minded our bags for us while we went for a walk around Bucharest.

“Nice place very close to train station”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 October 2008

Stayed here for two days in Sept 08. It is no more than a 5 minute walk from the train station so you don't have do deal with the Bucharest taxi sharks waiting at the station. There is a metro (subway) stop in the train station so you can use this hotel as a base to see the city.
Nice clean hotel with fairly large rooms with large nice bathrooms. Furniture looks like Ikea style (i.e. nothing fancy but comfortable). There is a free internet terminal in the lobby which worked very well. The staff wasn't unfriendly but not overly friendly either - they seemed to spend a lot of time sitting out back on the patio smoking.
Restaurant in the basement had pretty good food. Unfortunately as soon as they served me dinner they cranked up loud techno-pop music. Nice breakfast included though.
All in all this is not a bad place and I would stay here again.

  • Liked — location near the train station
  • Disliked — ambivalent attitude of some of the staff
