We spent two nights at the Hotel Central in Bucharest in November. We were several friends traveling together, and we were nervous about what we might find because the rate was so reasonable, but we were very pleasantly surprised. It is newly renovated, and although the rooms are the size you would expect in Europe, they were efficient and comfortable, although one of us had to use the desk in our room as a luggage rack because of the space. Between our group, we had four different rooms, and ours was actually the smallest. The bathrooms were modern and well appointed. Be sure to ask for a room on one of the higher floors and in the back off the street. One of our group was there on a Saturday night and suffered from loud street noise because they were on the main road. The breakfast was generous and varied - really delicious choices with lots of local foods. The staff was friendly and helpful. They sent us just down the block to a local restaurant that was a hit with us. The free wi-fi worked well and could be picked up in all of our rooms.
While in Bucharest, be sure to take the Hop On - Hop Off bus if you have time. The ticket is good for 24 hours after you first buy and validate it. Also look up the free walking tours which can be found on the internet. We met the guide in Old Town and had a free 2+ hour tour. Tips were gladly accepted but not mentioned or asked for by the guide. It was really interesting and a great way to see the city at night on foot. Do not miss the outdoor Village Museum, which is on the Hop On - Hop Off bus route, and be sure to give yourself at least a couple of hours there.
We emailed the hotel about transportation from the airport, and they had a driver pick us up. Five people, one way, was E55. There is also an airport van service that you can find on the internet, but the price is about the same, and we did not have to drive around the city dropping off others by using the service arranged by the hotel. It was nice that we could put the fee onto our hotel bill and did not have to worry about having local money the second we arrived.
