“Average hotel in the town center”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 November 2007

I stayed in this hotel twice: in June 2006 and again this weekend. (November 2007)
My impression has been exactly the same both times. And is the same of what I read in previous reviews.
Location: very good. Central, in a safe area and with eveything at walking distance.
Rooms are not small and in fairly good conditions. Decoration is not bad. Not luxorious, but still quite nice.
Receptionists are, as someone else already pointed out, rude. They don't try to be helpful at all, and whatever you ask them it seems as if you are bothering them. Don't know why, but it seems that if you are not impolite you cannot work at the reception of this hotel ! Otherwise, how can it happen that they all are behaving in the same manner ?!
On the contrary, staff at the doors and cleaning ladies are usually kind.
Breakfast is OK: acceptable but not particualry rich.
If you need a taxi just get in on the road and stop one. Do not book via the hotel: the taxi will try and charge you at least the double of a standard fare. If you ask them why and complain theyll'argue that it is "a private car" not a taxi. What this should mean and why the fare would have to be more than the double is a mistery !
Anyway, if you are in a hurry and need to get a taxi from the hotel, at the end of the trip negotiate with the divre and don't give him more than 50/60% of his first request.

“Great Hotel and Location - but watch out for Rip Off Taxi Drivers!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 October 2007

My son and I stayed in the Lido for two days during October and were generally delighted with the quality and service, and useful location. We had a fabulous fifth-floor twin room with balcony overlooking a busy eight-lane thoroughfare, and city lights, but the room was well soundproofed at night. The reception staff were generally helpful but breakfast was a litle lacking with a very limited choice and was below usual European standards. However, I must warn visitors not to book their taxi back to the airport, via the hotel. I had read numerous warnings about Bucharest taxi drivers but expected that booking via the hotel's reception and doorstaff would avoid excessive over-charging. This was just the opposite! As I was about to leave, Reception asked the uniformed Door Staff to arrange a taxi. A normal yellow cab shortly pulled up, and my cases loaded, but then the Door Staff informed me the journey would cost 75 Euros! After much complaining, they reduced the fare to 50 Euros! I finally stormed off with the cases, caught another cab round the corner, which charged me 15 Lei - just under 5 Euros!!! I have since emailed the hotel complaining. Just be very careful and always ensure the taxi's meter is switched on and set to 0 and ensure the driver knows you are carefully checking. Don't stand for excessive over-charging!

  • Liked — Balcony overlooking lively street and city lights, good location for city sights
  • Disliked — Door Staff trying to get us to pay Rip-Off Taxi Charges!

“Good value in Bucharest”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 August 2007

Stayed at the Lido in August 2007. I go to Bucharest every summer, and usually stay at the Intercontinental. This year, however, I found the room rates at the Intercontinental way too high (~$300), since the rooms are tiny, and so decided to go with a much more reasonable ($150) option at the Lido, a hundred yards away. It is a pleasant hotel with a European old-school hotel vibe. The receptionist was not very helpful in trying to locate my reservation I had made through Otel.com, so I had to insist until she realized that my first name had been entered as my last name. Then she turned very friendly once she noticed we had the same birthday!
Beyond this initial hiccup, I found my stay very pleasant - the rooms are spacious (if sparsely decorated), the bathroom quite large, the bed comfortable (though very low when compared to US-style), and the daily breakfast had a wide selection. Yes, the carpets in the hallways could use an update, but the occasional local sculptures and artwork compensate even for the tiny, old elevator.
A much better value if you are not staying there on an expense account.

  • Liked — Location, spaciosness of rooms
  • Disliked — Old, tiny elevator - I just took the stairs

“rude receptionists!”

I stayed at Hotel Lido on july 2005. Although the rooms are good, the reception staff is so rude. They behaved my romanian girlfirend as if she was a prostitute. They insulted her with their looks, style of talking. Moreover although I paid a total of more than 400 EURs to the hotel, they insisted me to pay 4 EURs more for a missing minibar vodka which I didn't drink!! They treated me as if I was a lier. Should a man who pays 400 EUR for a few nights lie for 4 EURs? Don't go to this hotel if you don't want to be insulted and treated as a lier.

“Pretty nice hotel in central Bucharest”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 June 2005

We were booked at the Lido through our tour package on our way in and out of Bucharest so we had two different rooms. We were pleased with our first room, spacious, very clean, air conditioning, modern bathroom with nicer toiletries (shampoo and bath gel) and a hair dryer. On the way back we got an even larger 2 room suite with a couch, chairs and TV in one room and beds in another, a huge space for 2 people.

The location is very central, we could easily walk to many of the sights or metro transportation was close enough to walk to. Breakfast is included in the rate and is a typical Romanian/European breakfast with eggs, meat, cheese, cereal, juice, bread.

There is an outside pool but it wasn't filled, not sure if it was too early or if it's just not filled yet. It was warm enough to.

As with the previous review, we too found that having the hotel arrange a taxi was a ripoff. In our case they called for a taxi to the train station and the meter read a whopping 400,000 lei, $13 to go the very short distance between the two when it should of cost less than 100,000 lei. It's very hard to argue with someone at 5 am in a not so nice part of town. This is not uncommon though in Bucharest, it happened again to us at a different hotel.

I would definitely stay here again if the price was right, just watch out for those taxis!!!
