I am giving two stars, because the Internet worked consistently during my four day stay and the hotel was walking distance to the conference location, but there were too many things that didn't work. Of course some of these were resolved, but that's not the point. For a 5-star hotel, I expect things to work flawlessly.
1. I stayed on a non-smoking floor, but still the whole corridor smelled of smoke. Many of the rooms one had to walk through to get to breakfast smelt heavily of smoke and the area before entering the breakfast room was literally blue of smoke. Very off-putting.
2. The breakfast was generous, but the coffee was awful and the healthy dark brown bread ran out within an hour on nearly all days, leaving only white and sweet breads. The juices didn't seem to be fresh either.
3. The heating in the hotel is oppressive and windows cannot be opened. After three days of putting the thermostat to below 10 and the fan at maximum, I was able to get a reasonable temperature, but nearly all of my fellow conference participants complained bitterly about not being able to sleep at night because of the oppressive heat.
4. Water pressure was very low even at the sixth floor and the shower was a dribble most of the time. Toiletries were not systematically refilled.
5. The hotel proudly offered free printing, but when asked at reception I was bluntly told: printer is not working. When I looked a little annoyed, the girl added: and we don't know whether it will be repaired, because it is the weekend. No further apology or offer to help. I had to push to get her to inform me that I could print at the business centre.
6. The business centre is an unattended room in a hidden corner and could only be found by systematically going through all rooms on the first floor. It looked very shabby and although the print rate was reasonable at 1 lei/page, the usage rate of 1 lei/minute was not as it took the computer nearly two (paid) minutes to even start up. I then found out it wouldn't read memory sticks, so I had to pay 5 lei for nothing.
I only paid 100 euro a night, but I think the rack rate of this hotel is over 300 euro, which is an outrage for what they are offering. Next time I visit Bucharest, I will definitely choose another hotel.
