“Nice place near park”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 October 2008

Stayed here for one night while passing through the city. Hotel is billed as a 4 star and is fairly expensive (for eastern Europe anyway).
Room was clean but not large but had high ceilings which made the room look larger than it actually was. Bathroom had a shower but no bath. Brown porcelin toilet with cheap white plastic toilet seat (4 star hotel?) The TV remote did not work even though the hotel staff insisted that it did.... The front desk personnel were not overly friendly but not unfriendly either. Breakfast was good.
Best thing about the hotel was the location right across the street from a beautiful (in the summer anyhow) park. Hotel appeared to be in the center of an area with lots of government buildings. From what I saw just by walking around it is a beautiful city and I would like to come back and spend more time here.

“What a Scam!”

We booked this hotel for a little business and some tourist actives while in the capital.
We decided to stay a few more nights and were told the price and double checked that is was in US Dollars. When we returned home the charge was in Euros. The lady at the front desk knew she was scamming us - as we explained that she was their when we were quoted the price in US Dollars. The entire country operated in USD. The front desk is doing nothing to help a country that needs all the help it can get from tourists.
There are some other places to stay close by and I would look into those.
Also there is NOT a pool nor a game room nor a gym - all the things that are on the website.
The food was horrid and room service topped one of the worst dinners in my life!! All the food outside of the hotel was GREAT!!! We loved the city and will return - it's too bad this place gets any business as it will hurt city that has a lot to offer!

  • Liked — location - housekeepers were very good
  • Disliked — staff, lied to us, horrid food, rude front desk, bartender was the worst we saw in the country, breakfast staff was miserable

“Old fashioned in attitude and service (overpriced)”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 January 2006

I stayed in an apartment on the 4th floor for a week. Firstly I initially thought the sheets a bit rough until I realised that the maid had not put any clean linen sheets over the woollen undercovers. After a couple of nights, I asked for linen sheets when I saw them on the daily trolley, which were provided with apologies.
Secondly I was not allowed to entertain my friends in my apartment despite it being provided with a dining room !!
Additionally I was not allowed to have a friend use the gym or have a swim in the pool. A bit lonely if you are in Moldova alone.
The breakfast was mediocre, and unimaginative, not up to scratch. It screamed of the old fashined kitchen I glimpsed out back. If you want to experience corridoor negotiators and dealings, then sure you will see it here? But really there isnt anything underhanded. Lots of business in Moldova is comnducted with a degree of paranoia, secrecy, and whispers, even though there is little need for it.
I would not stay again, overpriced and dowdy, no one smiles either !!

“They think its Moldova (it is now!)”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 September 2005

Now it doesn't seem right to review this hotel in the same way that you might a Holiday Inn in my home town of Reading because hell this was an adventure & you just can't get bogged down in details of dripping taps & the speed of service at the bar

Everyone assured me this was the best hotel in Moldova & who am I to disagree. Certainly its where the government appeared to put its guests. There was a very jolly, tubby American arms salesman conducting his business at the top of his voice in the lobby with assorted Moldovan military coming hither & thither in preparation for the meeting with the Minister.

I heard all this because my guide had specifically been given the wrong information about who to look for (apparently I was expected to be an old lady rather than the svelte God of English manhood I had always imagined myself to be perceived as) so I sat & waited for 45 minutes blissfully unaware that there was a guide waiting for me outside. With hindsight I do rather think that the receptionist might have done better than to deny to the guide all knowledge of anyone from the UK staying at the hotel...

The breakfast buffet was fine & I enjoyed seeing the manageresss lord it up over the young waiters &waitresses- an adjustment to the fruit bowl here & a shuffle of the yoghurt pots there- you certainly knew who was boss! It was nice that in a country racked with unemployment that the hotel seemed to offer job shaing (different waiters every day) to help spread what wages there are around a bit

The rooms were comfortable in that dark wood east european way but the standard problem of these parts- curtains that didn't quite cover the windows meant that the mornings started early if you get my drift

Would I stay there again? Only if I went to Moldova again & unless I am going into Defence Sales I think this was a once in a lifetime trip. That said I would, on balance, recommend you to go there, should you be passing.
