“Whatever you do - DO NOT stay here”

Overpriced, sub-standard and dirty accommodation...

OVERPRICED: We spent 2 nights at Henrik Apartments: 1 night in August upon our arrival in Croatia and 1 night in September upon our departure. At the time of booking online, we thought it seemed expensive but thought this was to be expected in Croatia. However, after having traveled throughout Croatia for 5 weeks, we soon realised that it was grossly overpriced, especially taking into account the facilities and venue. When we returned to Zagreb in September for our departure, we queried the price as, firstly, it was NO LONGER HIGH SEASON and secondly, we were wiser as to what such accommodation should cost - especially given their venue and the facilities they offer. The attitude was one of "take it or leave it" and we were forced, at that late stage, to stay for the night.

Re QUALITY: When we booked online, we booked a “Private Double Ensuite” room, which according to the website description, means a PRIVATE bathroom. Upon arrival, we were given a tiny room with a SHARED bathroom and told that this was all there was available - again a "take it or leave it" attitude! Added to this, the bed was broken and we had to try to fix the loose slats of the bed's base, under the thin mattress, before we could sleep on it. At HRK440 per night (Euro 60.68), we soon enough discovered on our travels through Croatia just how badly we had been ripped off.

When we returned in September, we were given a bigger room downstairs with a private bathroom for the same price, which although still overpriced, particularly as it was end of season, further proves just how badly overcharged we had been for the first tiny room upstairs with a shared bathroom. Added to this, the downstairs room had no linen on the bed, although this was requested and we were forced to sleep on dirty pink toweling mattress protectors, which did not even cover the mattress properly. The Duvet covers were either also dirty or were so old and washed-out, that they felt dirty. They certainly did not smell fresh and clean.

The shower cubicle had broken racks that were tied up to hold them together and the cubicle was dirty. I have photographs of all of this. The bed was so small that we would not have been able to have a comfortable night's sleep and we had to use the sleeper couch. When we requested linen for the sleeper couch, the same type of pink toweling mattress protector was given to us in a crumpled up ball in a scruffy old plastic shopping bag.

We DO NOTrecommend Henrik Apartments at all! Its about time that travellers refuse to support businesses that overprice and under-supply based on the attitude that "this is Zagreb" (or wherever else) and therefore you must just pay whatever price they choose to charge and accept what is given as acceptable.

“Stay away as far as you can.”

Unfortunately I didn't read any reviews before I booked the place. I just checked out their website where everything looks absolutely nice. I have travelled with a friend.

The price was 10% higher then their (and other) websites has promised - we payed 450 instead of 400 Kunas (62€). We payed right away when we came (which was quite unnusual), but we didn't get the bill. When I asked a middle-aged lady about the bill (she is the owner of the place and a bar which is used a reception) she asked me if I really need it. It was quite clear she is trying to rent the appartments without paying any taxes for it.
She also tried to seel us a trip around Croatia - she is connected to some private tour agency. Very un-professional. Luckly, we didn't agree on that.

When booking I clearly said I wanna seperated beds, because I was travelling with a friend and not a partner. She promised I will get it, but we got a french-size bed which was very awkward.
There was an awful air in the room (like they didn't open the door for a year) and I had the same problem with a shower like mentioned by some travellers earlier. The shower is suppose to be new and a good one, but it seems like they bought a very used one. Except from the shower-head, the water was also coming from the top of the shower - unfortunately the last one wasn't working properly and the water was ice-cold. Now you can imagine how it looked like to take a shower. After showering for 2 minutes, all bathroom was full of water - shower was obviously broken.

The place also didn't feel safe. It seems like we were the only guests, no other people any close except the owner who wanted to take advantage of guests in any possible way. We decided to leave the place and not to spend the night there. No money refund, of course.
I trully wouldn't reccomend you staying there - you will get ripp off.
For paying just 20% more you will get a very comfortable room in a four star hotel in the city center. If not, go to a hostel. I feel very sorry I wasn't thinking of that arlier.

“Think twice before you book with Henrick Apartment”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 September 2009

I've read a couple of bad reviews of Henricks but decided to ignore them and went ahead with booking with this place because of its price and that they promosed to provide us a parking space. This place is recommended by Rick Steve, so I think it must hold up to certain standard of dependability . I was wrong.

When I booked my room, the person called Daniel replied saying he can "offered a double room with private bathroom" for the price of 400kn. And "in case you plan to arrive by car, I can offer you a free parking space not far from your room inour backyard". When I confirmed my reservation and specifically asked for a parking space, I got a more cryptic reply: "When you get there, just ask for parking space, because we don't take note of it. Everybody can park, just emphasize it."

When we arrived, we found that there is absolutely NO parking at the hotel premise. I had to park illegally in the bike's lane while my wife went in to try to check in. All this time, I was being cursed by all the bikers whom I inconvenienced. In the meantime, they told my wife that if we want to stay in the room in the hotel, we have to find a public paid parking spot on the roadside. Or they can offer us another "apartment" nearby which has its own parking. Obviously we took the second option.

It turns out that this "apartment" is about 4 blocks more off from the hotel which is already on the fringe of the main area. And the "apartement" that they referred to turned out to be a room inside an apartment which we have share the bathroom with 3 other rooms.

But the most scary part is its neighborhood. Not only is this place 15 or 20 minutes extra walking time to the city center, the neighborhood looks bery sketchy. When we walked home around 7:30pm, we were approached by 2 men asking us for 2 kunas. We ignored them. In New York City, we ran into these annoyances a lot and all you have to do is to ignore them. But in this case, we got splattered with beer on our backs when we tried to walk away from them!

The room itself looks like it's been quite newly rennovated. But we found out quickly that the shower and sink drained very slowly. And the "sanitized" glasses were dirty upon inspection. These are reminicensed of the 2 other bad reviews we saw here.

More strangely, they asked for full cash payement UP FRONT! Not any of the places we stayed anywhere deals like that. And in exchanging for our original room with the one with the parking, we lost the breakfast which were supposed to be included with the room.

Overall, we were really disgusted that the hotel was not up front about the parking situation. And the fact that we did not feel safe at that in that so called "apartment" which they put us up in. I would strong recemmend any one to stay away from dealing with this hotel.

“More than adequate”

I was a bit concerned after reading the mixed reviews here (note to self: read reviews first, THEN book...), so I was pleasantly surprised when shown to my room.

The location was pretty good (no more than 5-10 minutes from the centre of Zagreb); the room was clean (if a little strangely decorated) and the staff friendly. My only criticism was that the room was hot. Very hot. There was an air-conditioning device in the corridor outside the room, but with the room door closed it had no useful effect.

Recommended, if you're looking for somewhere cheap and cheerful.
