A good budget hotel in Zagreb was impossible to find, so we opted for Golden Tulip Holiday Hotel despite the reviews here. Our expectations were reasonably low - so we weren't disappointed. Firstly, we had car and there is free parking, please don't stay here if you are relying on public transport.

The hotel is quiet being so far out, the room was spacious and clean. The breakfast offers a resonable choice although not great quality. But as others have said it has a very communist/Eastern Europe feel and the furniture is very old and worn, (have seen less sad looking lamps in a skip) and the bed was very lumpy and creeky.

It is expensive for what you get, but try finding something better in Zagreb for the price.

The rooms we stayed in during our visit at Golden Tulip wasn't even of first star standard. The following was encountered in the rooms: Very noisy AC with a mould smell, stained shower curtain (don't want to know what the stain was), fridge with dead insects, a toilet smelling of urine and beds that not even dead people would be able to sleep in. Think twice before you book this hotel, at least the cheaper rooms.
