“Basic but Fine”

My husband and I stayed here for 1 night on our way from Hungary to the Plitvice Park in Croatia. It was a short, flat walk from the train station, and the location is very central, right behind the main square, and near the farmer's market on a narrow side street with lots of restaraunts nearby. It was very hard to find the street sign for Skalinska and then once on the street, hard to find the upstairs entrance to the hostel, although a waiter helped us with that. Once upstairs, the hostel is new, pleasant, clean, and quiet. We stayed in a private double, and shared a nice, clean bathroom in the hall. The furniture and bedding all looks to be new and in the spirit of Ikea. The front staff were strict but through, and we had some good, cheap, italian fare in the street below. The odd thing about the staff, in a rather comical yet sad way, was how disparaging and dismal they were about the city, the hostel, and even all of Croatia. They actually disagreed with positive things that we said about their own establishment - pretty unusual for front desk staff! The main disadvantage is Zagreb, there's nothing really here...good as a stop-off but not for much else. It seems that the post-communist, post-Balkan war Zagreb has new shops and fresh coats of paint, but some vital spirit, energy and/or vibe seems to be lacking. While seemingly safe, and pleasant, this capital somehow feels drab and depressed. The only thing worth seeing I would say is the Museum of Naive Art maybe - it had some neat paintings and postcards, albeit overpriced and small. We took the train in from Budapest, spent one night, and then walked down to the bus station, (conveniently located pretty centrally and near the train station) -from here take a bus to Plitvice Park. Along the way you can take in the tradgedy of the recent war in the form of abandoned and bullet-ridden villages and homes, and then you after much twisting and turning (wear a sea-band bracelet if prone to motion sickeness) you will arrive at the magnificent Plitivice Park - well worth the trip! One of the top 2 most spectacular days we spent in 6 wks in eastern europe!

  • Liked — centrally located, clean, safe
  • Disliked — hard to find (not well marked), zagreb is drab
