“Best breakfast I had in Bulgaria!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 November 2011

My partner and I stayed in this hotel on our last night in Bulgaria and out of the total of six hotels we stayed in, this one did by far the best buffet breakfast, which made it a personal favourite for me. If you are hoping for a full English/cooked breakfast with bacon, sausage, beans etc then you may be disappointed- however in fact we did not find this anywhere during our stay, and breakfast in the other hotels we visited (mainly three-star ones) generally consisted of tea/coffee and bread with a piece of cheese and ham! This one (along with the ubiquitous above) included eggs cooked to order, salad, juice, cakes/muffins, cereals and jam, and I was full for most of the day.

Another aspect in which Hotel the House stood out was the quality of the bathroom and shower, which was a 'rain' shower within its own section of the bathroom, and definitely the most luxurious one I had in Bulgaria. Bathroom was very large and clean, no issues with getting hot water (very important in November!)

Overall, these were the bits I liked best about Hotel the House:
- Breakfast (included)
- Quality of shower and bathroom
- Size of hotel room- in fact more of an apartment as there was a separate living room, entrance room and hallway
- Hotel receptionist was very friendly and helpful, and even came up to our room in the early morning to give us a wake-up call (as there was no telephone in our room)
- Well heated, in fact we found that it was usually warm enough without the heating on
- Very good value for what we paid
- Convenient location, just off Vitosha Boulevard

The things I thought could be improved:
- Would have been good to have a computer for people to use (although they do have free wi-fi for people bringing their own laptops)
- Wasn't keen on decor of bedroom, I thought that the dark colour of the beds and carpet gave the room a bit of a 'creepy' feel. This was the only real negative however. Overall it was my favourite place to stay in Bulgaria and I would definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: There is no lift so if you are in the top room you need to be prepared to climb two flights of (narr...

“Good Value and Location”

This is a nice renovated older house, in a good location, well maintained with a very pleasant staff. Just across from the Central Park and Palace of Culture, tram 7 will take you downtown and to the train/bus station quickly, ( a metro station is currently under construction ) Breakfast was delicious and varied with eggs cooked to order, ( wait 'til you taste Bulgarian tomatoes; the best in the world !! ) the staff was kind and helpful, though some had limited English. The room the first night was clean , but small, I booked an extra night and got a huge room with beautiful bathroom. The neighborhood is pleasant and quiet. There is an attached restaurant with excellent food and reasonable prices to try some authentic Bulgarian fare. I would stay again for sure. Thanks to Annie and the rest of the friendly staff.

Room Tip: Choose and upstairs room

“Well located and good value hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 September 2011

Wife and I stayed here for 4 nights in mid May. It was right by the park of the National Palace of Culture. Location wise it was close enough to walk to town centre (15 mins slow level walk) and almost to all other places of interest too. We didn't have to take public transport at all except going to Boyana Church (20 mins by white mini-bus on the main road 3 minutes from Hotel). The room was large but the deco was a bit old fashioned! Bathroom is clean and the shower worked well. It was off a quiet side road. We were in the 1st floor of the main building and we always used the side/back door.

Breakfast was fine and set you up well till lunchtime. However, depending on the staff on duty, communication in English could be limited. They were all friendly none-lthe-less. With a good map you could visit all the places of interest very easily. With the very decent price, we'd recommend this hotel to the others as good value and well located.

Room Tip: Ask for a good street map

“Impressive bathroom”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 August 2011

This is a very reasonably priced hotel with a good location for sightseeing and shopping in Sofia.

My room was spacious, and the bathroom was almost luxurious. Access to guestrooms was through the restaurant, and it was always tempting to take a look at the kitchen on the way. There was no elevator, and the staircase was very narrow.

Breakfast was all right. It was partly a self-service buffet, cold cuts were served to the table, and eggs were prepared upon order.

There is a guarded parking lot just across the street. The hotel manager suggested I could leave my motorbike at the restaurant's terrace instead, right there in one corner beside a table, and I did so.

“Feel very well taken care of”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 August 2011

I have only begun my stay at The House in Sofia, but I am deeply impressed with the service so far. We had complications with our arrival to Sofia last night, which meant arriving at 4 a.m. today! On top of this there is considerable construction all over downtown Sofia, making negotiating streets neigh on impossible. The place was locked tighter than a drum, so it felt like heaven when the English-speaking proprietor stuck his head out the window and came down to rescue us. My husband was along unexpectedly for this one night, and this was no problem at all. The larger room I had reserved had hot water problems so he put us into a smaller room and wished us a good night. Late the following morning when we finally arose, we were both fed a good breakfast, the same late-night rescuer gave us detailed instructions for the airport, and the staff moved my belongings to the nicer room which was then available. I could not be more impressed with the kindness and helpfulness of this gracious staff. I look forward to staying the week.
