“Fair enough”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2011

Stayed here for three nights. Clean room and very friendly staff. The rooms could do with some real art. My room was a bit neutral, I would say. Internet is fast and there is a wireless connection making it irrelevant to bring a cable. Most rooms in the back face rooms in an other building some ten meters away. Breakfast is OK I guess. I have craved for better breakfasts at English hotels claiming to be four star hotels. This is fair enough, pancakes, bread, sausages, etc.. the coffee was horrible though.

Short story: Central location and value for money.. Recommended! Double your pay and get less at other hotels.

“Not a Four Star”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 October 2010

The Sveta Sofia in Sofia, Bulgaria, is centrally located, making it very easy to visit themain sights in central Sofia. However, beware, it is nowhere near four star standard more like three. There was no tea or coffee making facility and the toiletries were very basic and sparse. The decor is faded Soviet era and very dated. The fridge in Room 101 (perhaps a warning there!) wqaas extremely noisy. I reported it but nothing was done, and in the end I had to switch it off.

Sofia has a way to go before it becomes tourist friendly. It is easy to walk around the centre as it is a small city, but taking excursions out of the city is very difficult, and ver expensive if you are travelling solo. There are no coach excursions available, at least not in the Autumn, and the only way is to share a hire car. Using public transport is made very difficul simply because all the signs are in Cyrillic script (although most of the main street signs are in Latin script also). So you can't make out where a bus is headed, and not many passersby can speak English (and why should they). They are excpanding the metro system so there are major roadworks in the centre. It istill a nice place to visit, but easy at present. I hop it changes, but I suspect it will take quite a while.

“Skip the breakfast and avoid staying here in the summer”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 August 2010

The room was large but had a small air conditioning unit which was clearly not up to the task. Even though it was on constantly, it was very difficult to get any sleep. The bathroom was not cleaned (with used chewing gum on the shower stall!) and the room in general could do with a lot more cleaning.

The breakfast buffet was the worst I have ever had at a hotel. Lukewarm coffee, scrambled eggs which looked and smelled three days old, etc. There are several good cafés just around the corner, so my advice would be to skip the breakfast altogether.

None of the workers looked at all interested in their job. Don't expect any help with anything.

The location is excellent, so this might be an OK choice if you want a cheap hotel in the center of the city, and you don't have any expectations.

“Definitely not 4 star”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 August 2010

Stayed 3 nights with husband and infant son. Baby cot was requested but had to be requested again at check in. It was delivered to the room quickly and was of OK standard. Room clean but small and rather shabby. Bathroom had shower only. No safe in room (although available at reception). No tea/ coffee facilities although received kettle when requested.
Restaurant very shabby and quality of dinner poor. Breakfast was a buffet and contrained hot food which had not been kept hot nor attempted so. No internet access available to guests. Beware as they charge a 5% fee when paying by credit card.
Location is very good on a nice street and rooms were clean.

“Nicely Run and Comfortable City Centre Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 June 2010

I stayed at the Sveta Sofia Hotel as part of a group for four nights (Two double occupancies and five single occupancies) The Sveta Sofia Hotel is a perfectly located hotel for staying in the city centre. Staying here means you can walk to any places of interest in the city day and night. I will definitely stay here again if I go to Sofia.

The staffs were all very welcoming as well as helpful in all regards and requests. It was a case of service with a smile. The Manageress was excellent and very understanding to a room change and a sudden cancellation.

The hotel rooms are as you will expect if you stay at a Premier Inn, Travelodge or Ibis in England. That is to say the rooms have comfortable beds (Single or Double occupancy) and en suite shower with toilet. The TV has CNN, BBC World, a couple of music channels and many Bulgarian channels. The air conditioning works perfectly as well. There is also a hair dryer, fully stocked fridge and towels. All rooms are sized for double occupancy so that means big rooms and they are cleaned daily including Sundays. A few rooms had no wireless internet access but you can rectify this by requesting a room change or using your laptop in reception. There is also a free gym with a Smith Machine, Treadmill and Work Bench.

Breakfast is not as bad as described by others – you get what you pay for. To be precise breakfast is good. It has toast or sliced breads, variety of fruits, cheeses, boil or fried or poached eggs , sausages, ham, cereals, with tea, coffee or fruit juice.

Overall, this is a good hotel not claiming to be luxurious. It has all that you need for a comfortable and relaxing stay. Just ask at the 24hour reception if you want something or have a problem. Always ask the receptionist to get you a taxi and always agree a price before you leave. If you flag a taxi, agree a price before you leave.

I advise that you take a taxi from the airport as taking the bus and tram would most likely get you lost as English is not widely spoken (Not meant as derogatory to Bulgaria). Don’t pay more than 15Lev but I can assure you that the taxi driver will try to get more.
