My wife and I recently stayed here during our travels through the area. We knew we only needed a clean, basic bed and would not have the time or necessity for frills, as this would be a quick overnight stay. So, we blind booked this through Hotwire (Note: booking through Hotwire literally saves you mere pennies, and you end up spending more than direct booking once you add in the fees).
The hotel is in no-man's land, as it is eight miles from downtown Ashland, and two miles from I-64. There is little around it, so I think that the complaints about its location are legitimate if you have a need to be in Ashland. Otherwise, if you are passing through and don't mind a three minute drive off the interstate, this is fine.
The facility is newer and adequately clean. The parking lot is well lit. My wife and I arrived after midnight when snow was beginning to fall hard, so we were part of a larger group of truckers and other commercial drivers who were looking to get off the road and get to sleep. We were third in line, but we didn't get checked in for about 10 or 15 minutes. The clerk seemed irritated to be doing his job after Midnight. He took his good old time with the other drivers, and irritatingly said to me "I've been waiting for you to arrive," as if he could now go to sleep or something. Other than those of us checking in, there seemed to be few, if any, other guests. I would estimate that the hotel was between 60 and 75% empty.
The room was about the best you could expect from a Days Inn. It was clean, spartan, and basic. The beds were comfortable. It fit our needs as a quick stopover.
The following morning, my wife came down with the flu, and she ended up sleeping in. At about 11:15, 45 minutes before checkout, she got the strength to get out of bed. We began packing up, but being weak, she needed additional time. At about 11:50 I called the front desk and asked for 15 additional minutes. I don't know if this was poorly delivered sarcasm, but I was met with a pregnant pause, and then a stern and gruff "If I must." I travel a lot, and need those extra few minutes from time to time. I have never had a problem before this. Stunned, I haphazardly threw our belongings into plastic grocery bags and met the noon deadline. Although this hotel was essentially empty, and there were no individuals waiting to check in, this clerk desperately wanted Room 106 to be vacated at noon. Needless to say, I found his "come back soon" at checkout to be a bit disingenuous.
If it weren't for the strange clerks, I would recommend this hotel. It's clean, well kept, and competitively priced. However, to me, basic courtesies are not negotiable.
