“Although this resort can be a great experience,i wouldn't recommend staying here for longer than a couple of nights.”
Now this is the description of the resort on its website:
Robinson Crusoe Island is a secluded Fiji Beach Resort surrounded by a beautiful lagoon, coral reefs, a long white sandy beach, traditional thatched bures, island music, fresh tropical fruits, fresh locally caught fish and friendly pacific islanders. This and much more awaits you on the shores of Robinson Crusoe Island.
And now the reality check!
The island is indeed very very secluded,it takes a half an hour boat ride on a dirty river to get to this "beautiful lagoon". The water in the lagoon was so dirty (almost dark brown) that i didn't go for a swim once! That must've been the biggest disappointment of my trip. I've booked 12 nights on this island straight after reading the above description, thinking that i was going to have a good time relaxing on the beach and going for a swim in the lagoon every day. That did not happen!
Of course the owners told me that the water is normally crystal clear and that i was just unfortunate for whatever reason that i cannot remember anymore, but to me it sounded like they just did not want me to mention that in my review..
Either way,i'm just warning travelers that are hoping to find beautiful surroundings and crystal clear waters that this might not happen. The island and lagoon did not look a bit like the picture that is on the resort's web site, when i went there in April.
The coral reef mentioned above was a good few minutes boat ride away. (The boat trip to the reef was included in the price)
The "long white sandy beach" isn't in fact white and there's lots of seaweed in the water and on the beach itself. The main beach alongside of the resort is ok but gets packed with day trip tourists 5 days a week. The other side of the island looks like swamp but it seemed to be the only quiet spot on this island.
Traditional thatched bures were definitely a good experience, until it started to rain! Unfortunately when i stayed in the resort,it rained quite a bit. All my clothes got damp after a day of raining
Most evening the only music they played was RNB and it was loud, but i guess they were just trying to play what most of the young backpackers wanted to listen to.
Fresh tropical fruit?..hmm,i guess they mean the few slices of a banana and mango or papaya at breakfast..
The fresh locally caught fish on the other hand was like a dream. Delicious!
And the friendly pacific islanders? Yes they were very nice and friendly(apart from the odd person or two). Guys on the island were a bit too friendly, constantly trying to hit on women. I must say though that if u show them no interest, they let u be. So i guess that makes it alright.
There's few owners of this resort, the ones i met, would only talk to the day guests and didn't seem to care that much about the guest that were staying in the resort. But they seemed to be more than happy to warm up to me on my last day...and ask me to write a good review!
Just to sum it up.. if you feel a bit adventurous (sleeping in the bures and trying out bucket showers)and want to experience Fijian culture, meet some nice people, have a bit of fun and want to see a great fire dancing show, then do give this place a try! But if u are on the other hand looking for the beautiful lagoon and tranquil surroundings or are after a bit of luxury, this is not a resort for u!
Oh and last but not least,be aware that drinks are not included in meal plan, only a glass of water or juice at breakfast time,so if u are on a budget, take this into consideration..
