I spent ten nights at The Rainbow Reef Resort and it was possibly the most relaxing, comfortable, luxurious and hospitable holiday I have ever enjoyed. I have travelled extensively throughout the world and been fortunate to enjoy many great hotels and resorts. For me, Rainbow Reef walked the line between rustic, authentic beach living and five star accommodation, service and food unlike anywhere else. The Rainbow Reef itself is no more than a 5 minute boat ride from the beach - and I can say with absolute confidence that these dive sites are some of the best in the world. Don't miss the Great White Wall or The Fish Farm. Incredibly, healthy, vibrant reefs. Justifiably, one of the top 5 dive sites in the world.
The Resort itself is located ten minutes by boat, across the Somosomo straights, from Taveuni. Making it very easy to get to and yet very private, exclusive and peaceful once you are there... the rest of the world feels a million miles away.
The beach is incredible. A crescent of beautiful white sand overhung with palm trees. The water is incredibly clear and clean and is itself a world to explore. Snorkelling the reef off the beach opens up a world of incredibly healthy, old and developed coral and is buzzing with fish life of every shape size and colour. The natural beauty of this place alone is enough to awaken the senses and prove for a very special visit. You could spend your whole holiday snorkelling the reefs off the beach and never get bored. The resort provides Sea Kayaks, snorkles, masks, wet suits and other equipment if requested.
The gardens and grounds of the Resort are beautifully tended to. Kept clean and tidy, swept of sand and debris, always tidy and well maintained. Peacocks wander around the frangipani trees and coconut groves lending it a truly exotic and tropical atmosphere. There are many walks from the resort along which you will stumble upon lookout decks and areas to picnic and sunbathe. I recommend walking to the high lookout. From here you can really get a good sense of your surroundings.
The bure, or beach hut, I stayed in was utter luxury and incredibly private. There are only 5 bungalows on the entire resort and each of these is well spaced out along the beach. It was built in a traditional style with some modern touches. The King size four poster bed was a welcome comfort at night. Hot water in the en suite bathroom and outdoor shower and with 24hr electricity and internet. I spent many hours sitting in my hammock on my private balcony watching the world drift by. Sunrise from this balcony was particularly impressive (see photos below). The main buildings were beautifuly incorporated into the surroundings and all built from wood and natural materials. A very comfy and sociable indoor sitting room/bar and beautiful outdoor eating area made meal time effortless.
Meal times was always a memorable and supreme experience. Toto, the chef, provided incredible three course meals, three times a day. His menus were remarkably inventive and his talent as a chef is truly magnificent. Creating everything from classic dishes with a local twist to high end local delicacies and specialities. The food was a perfect compliment to the sensory pleasure of the surroundings. For the food alone, I would recommend you consider staying at this resort.
One of the most important things for me to mention here is the staff. Oscar does a remarkable job running the resort. His staff, Louata, Maopo, Abisai, Toto and others became good friends over the course of my stay. Its true what they say about Fijians they are incredibly friendly, hospitable and good natured people. When I was leaving, as my boat pulled away from the beach I knew I would miss the people there as much as I would miss the place.
In a nutshell - the remarkable thing about Rainbow Reef Resort is that it somehow manages to make you feel that you are lost on a desert paradise island and yet it provides the luxury and comfort of a world class hotel. This is not a balance that is easy to achieve and its clear that a lot of love, hard work and good taste has gone towards making my experience and my holiday unforgettable and truly magical. I was travelling alone at the time, but there were countless occasions I wished I had brought someone to share the experience with. As a romantic or honeymoon getaway I could not think of anywhere finer to spent time with a loved one. As a family holiday it would be the best in the world. As a diving holiday it was immeasurably perfect and I would go back there in a heartbeat. Hopefully one day I will be so lucky.
If you are lucky enough to find your way there enjoy every second.
