We found this hotel as walk-ins and had already looked at 10 other places that morning. Hostal Nuevo Ideal was just another beautiful old building we were peeking into as we passed, when we spied the little sign over the entry that indicated it was a hotel.
We can not say enough about the kindness of the owner and employees, and the easygoing atmosphere created by these people and also by the year-round boarders.
This is one of the safest and nicest places we have stayed in the US$20/night range, from Costa Rica to Uruguay including about 12 countries in central and south america.
The hotel rents some rooms to year-round boarders, interesting, fun and friendly folks of various professions, who generally love the interaction with us and other shorter term guests. We shared some beautiful meals with some really neat people and came to love the communal kitchen. We felt fortunate to find a place with so many friendly people and have made some lifelong friends. Median age is probably 45 but younger and older backpackers are welcome.
Our room was clean, comfortable, with private bath, door overlooking the enclosed courtyard (there are 2 courtyards, one with glass roof and one which is open) and window to the street. Yes a bit small but they clean the rooms every day so there is no funk factor unless you make it happen.
Check out the architectural details while you are there, there is for example a really neat sliding glass roof. Yes there are bits in need of repair (as mentioned by first reviewer) as with all old buildings, but all of the relevant stuff works. Electricity, plumbing all kept to very good repair and the entire facility tirelessly cleaned by Mirta on a daily basis.
When you are sitting under the grapevine in the open courtyard eating fresh peaches off the fragrant tree and chatting with interesting folks, you probably won't have time to point out missing scraps of paint.
There are some English speakers but you'll of course get more out of the experience if you try some Spanish.
