We have just checked out of this hotel. We booked a month's stay after reading recommendations in our guide book and online. Obviously, this hotel is no longer what it used to be. All the buildings and the office are up for sale - there seems to be little interest in maintaining the place. A German expat Paulo appeared to be running the place. Communication by email was poor. We booked from overseas after confirming there was availability. After days of hearing nothing, we sent another email to Paulo only to discover he had rented out our 1 bedroom unit and offered us instead a 2 bedroom for only 2 weeks. I arranged a late check in and left details of our flight from Australia. Once at the airport, we phoned to find check-in had closed and were told to return in the morning! After some insistence, he eventually 'found' our booking. I am grateful we did call.
The building is quaint and an excellent example of the local architecture. The apartment itself had 2 bedrooms, a dining area, bathroom and kitchenette. Despite the promises on its website there was no telephone at all and no "comforts of modern travel." The apartment was dirty and dank, there was a stubborn film of grease on every surface in the kitchenette. An old beaten toaster was stowed away and every lamp in the place was broken. The shower-head didn't function properly and the cupboards were unusable due to mould and water damage. We were given an incorrect WiFi password, and when we mentioned it to Paulo he appeared completely disinterested and unwilling to assist us.
We checked out immediately after finding an albeit smaller apart hotel in Pocitos 1 block from the Rambla and Montevideo's beaches - a much safer neighbourhood for tourists and excellent in the summer for the same price. The Punta Trouville Apartments offer fantastic service, excellent comfort and attention to detail, with deals for long stays.
I found the entire experience very disappointing and would not recommend the Bremen hotel or bar at all. There is a multitude of accommodation which is far superior and competitively priced.
