“Little dirty; great location; doable”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

Well, first of all, location is perfect is you want to be in downtown (which you probably want, despite the fact that some other areas of MVD are "nicer", but also have lower density of street life and restaurants, etc.).

The room was fairly dirty, e.g., with trash on the old carpets, with a long strand of hair under the toothbrush glass, etc, and other obvious signs of insufficient cleaning. I asked for the room to be vacuum cleaned, and whether or not it was done was not obvious. Clearly, because of dirty carpets and the general dirtyness, you probably don't want small children lurking around your room. As for me, I am not too picky and I got used to the dirt after a while.

Reception service is OK but not more. You get the information you ask for, but not more. Basically, the people in the reception seem overworked and therefore cannot be enthusiastic, but they'll get the job done.

The rooms are old and therefore with high ceilings, old furniture, etc. Few hangers; generally not high standard, but, again, gets the job done if you are not too picky. No safe. Patchy WiFi, which you sometimes cannot get to work, and sometimes you can.

Worst: the "breakfast": some old piece of bread with butter and/or jam (I don't remeber) and tea/coffee. But ... the service here was absolutely atrocious and the food was bad, so I obviously did not try breakfast the other days despite "breakfast" being included (maybe this is their business plan?). Fortunately you are in downtown and can have brunch in a bar. The "Manchester" grill/bar/cafeteria serves entirely OK steaks, for example.

Would I stay there again? Well, I extended my stay with a couple of days instead of trying to find another hotel and lugging my bags around. So, I might stay there again in the unlikely case I go back to MVD. However, if so, there are some nice-looking 4-stars with decent prices nearby (some don't appear on Tripadvisor) which I would probably try first.

Concerning the numerical ratings below: "Service" is "average" for reception staff and "terrible" for breakfast staff, hence "poor".

“A very odd budget hotel, but great location”

This is a very odd hotel..

Reception is on the first floor and when you getting the rooms, they have a strange layout.

The ceilings are very high and the bathroom has the toilet almost in the shower! In fact the flush is in the shower!

Tv reception is rubbish and wifi is patchy.

However, all in all, the hotel isn't bad and the location is great.

“Like many people have said here, It's a budget nice hotel, by no means a horrible one”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 March 2011

We stayed 9 days at the Los Angeles, starting from January 2,2011. In fact we arrived there about 1 am of January 3. The first thing that really called my attention is its location, near everything, almost in front of the Entrevero Square and a very short walk from the Palacio Salvo and The Independencia Square. We checked in and were shown our room. First looks deceived us. The room had no air conditioning. We were given a fan. We kept the fan on the nine days we stayed there without a minute break. Montevideo is by no means a hot city, so the fan did very well, but air conditioners lovers would have had problems. For the kind of traveler I am, a hotel room is just a place I keep my things in, take showers, use the toilet and rest after a long day journey, so the room was much more than enough. clean, nice bathroom and a confortable bed. The room was cleaned and had its towers changed every day. My room was on the first floor, next to the cafeteeria so there was some accasional noise from people chatting. Nothing to disturb.
The staff was nice and helpful and the coffee was ok for what I paid.

If hotel facilities is important for you on your trip. If you are looking for swimming pool, and room service, the Los Angeles is not your hotel. The Radson, which is nearby, must be it, but be ready to pay 4x more.

I will be back to Montevideo in 2012 and will stay at the Los Angeles again for sure

“One of a Kind”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 November 2010

Some people will love this hotel, while others will hate it. And, they will both be right. I was in a nearby 4-star and unable to extend my reservation. Then, discovered every 'good' hotel was fully booked as conferences were in town. And, so began the dreaded trek of 1-star, 2-star, hospedajes, residenciales and pensiones. If you are ever in this situation in Montevideo, go directly to the Los Angeles. Perfectly located directly on the main street. Building is old, with a lot of character, high ceilings, albeit peeling wallpaper and slow elevator. Bed, linens, pillows very comfortable. and with old pulldown shutter and light blocking curtains made for excellent sleeping conditions. Very rare positive conditions for this class of hotel. Room had ceiling fan (no AC) and strong (free) WIFI connection. Water was always hot. All rooms are NOT ceated equal in the L.A, On street side views are very nice, but there are busses. Some rooms are small with big bathrooms, while some are the other way around. Look until you find one you like. Can recommend 409. Breakfast was basic, served in spacious dining area. Rack rate posted as $60, though they only charged $50. (note: saw good sized radiators in room though this stay was during warm season,)

“Old, but still Decent”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 March 2010

We stayed there for 2 nights. The price was on the inexpensive side. But, this old hotel is needing of a makeover (the room reminded me of the Barton Fink's hotel room.). The hotel is big, centrally located in downtown Montevideo. A couple of blocks from the Old city gate. The staff was very friendly. The corridors are dark. The room was big, with small beds, old furniture and a very small TV; but clean The wallpaper was faded. The bathroom was OK, with some recent updated features.

The room came with breakfast included, which was basic (coffee, tea, OJ, bread, croissants, jams and butter), but filled us up.

There is a PC in the lobby, that can be used for free internet access. Not bad.

There are nicer hotels in Montevideo, but for a basic, no-frills inexpensive room, this hotel is a good choice.
