“Nice hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

Nice hotel to stay at in a central location. Walkable to most sights in the city. Rooms were very clean and the bed was comfortable.

As someone else stated, our shower also leaked water all over the bathroom floor. It was almost as if the glass partition wasn't long enough. So don't leave anything on the floor you don't want soaked! The elevator is also a bit scary as there is no internal door! We just opted to use the stairs.

Breakfast was basic - nothing special. Walkable to a grocery store though - nearly across the street. Wifi worked well throughout the hotel. Staff were ok - one girl spoke really good english and was cheerful and helpful, while the others didn't really talk to us much. We would stay here again though.

“Clean, nice place”

Good place to stay, would have stayed here again but the price went up about 25 USD for later in the week so stayed elsewhere. Awesome location, in the perfect area everything is walk able and is safe. If you are looking else where in Montevideo be really aware to not stay too close to the ferry terminal as it is a hardcore ghetto... There are many hotels in the area of the Alvear, trust me this is the area you want to be in.

“Location you'll like, service you'll remember”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

Alvear is Like a $20 bill found in your sock drawer--it won't change your life, but it will start your day right. Rooms are old and hallways are noisy. However, Central location (supermercado very close, too), fair prices and amiable service leave a favorable impression.

“Thumbs down!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 November 2011

Just stayed one night at this hotel with my husband. It is centrally and convenientlly located (10 min walk to plaza independencia, old town and teatro solis) but the hotel was quite disappointing.
CONS: the floor we stayed on (4th) had a stench of urine, the corridor leading to the room had no light, seems bulb was out, stand up shower did not have proper way to keep water in and water spilled all over into floor and soaked up bath mat. Elevator rather antiquated and seemed dangerous as it has no door separating you from the exterior door - definitely not child friendly. No full length mirror in room, no clock in room.

PROS: very clean sheets and towels and room overall clean. Staff polite and helpful.

Probably would not recommend or stay here again.

“Needs renewal but overall ok”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2011

This hotel is just about to be a bad hotel, but it isn't. Furniture, walls, ceilings, everything is quite old and the "lobby" and restaurant are a bit depressing and dark. Elevator is quite weird, with no internal doors (you can see the walls between floors moving as if they were the elevator door), seems dangerous to me.
Corridors follow the same standard with old carpet (but clean), fixtures and pictures on the walls.
Room was small but very clean, as well as the bathroom - old but clean. Windows are old and almost impossible to open (to improve the view), but compensated by new A/C with remote control. Flat screen TV. WiFi Internet in (I guess) every floor.
Service is overall good, they were helpful and polite.
Hotel well located, near some cafes, supermarket and different kinds of stores.
I booked this hotel as an emergency, I had to stay an extra day in Montevideo and this seemed the cheapest 3-star hotel. It includes breakfast and WiFi. Maybe I should have stayed closer to the beach, but would have been more expensive and no breakfast and WiFi.
I would recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Front street was quiet when I stayed there, almost like a boulevard, so no noises reaching the 5th f...
