“Location and Service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 October 2011

Even though the physical plant is a bit rundown, the hotel's staff puts itself out for you. The breakfast is exceptional. The location can't be beat. Wifi is delivered by floor, with a separate section for the lobby bar, with different passwords for each. My iPhone almost had a nervous breakdown. Some street noise if you have a room at the front.

“Average Hotel, Location Not Great on Weekends”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 April 2011

The weekend stay was really closed up and hard to find open shops and Restaurants. We are walkers and perhaps we did not find our way at first. The Breakfast was above Average with great Coffee and a wide selection. WiFI good not great but you for sure could get it. The room was a bit small but I cannot compare it to another in this City. Could be standard.

“Not a good option for a leisure trip”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 April 2011

We stayed at the hotel for 3 nights. It´s not quite what one would expect for a 4 stars hotel. Worn furniture, old fashioned lobby, needs renovating. Windows aren´t noise proof, so be prepared to the noise from the street, since it´s in a central area. We didn´t feel very safe walking around at night, since the streets are dark and without much movement. One good thing about the hotel is the staff, always helpful and friendly. The internet is reasonably fast, so that we could make calls with skype. Anyway, if you´re on business, the hotel can be a choice, otherwise, try to get one in a more pleasant area, near the coast of river plate.

“In a time warp”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 December 2010

This place might have been four stars when it opened (seventies or eighties by the look of the decor) but it’s faded a bit since then. That being said it’s reasonably quiet (double glazed windows) and comfortable. It’s probably worth the US$70/night or so we paid if (as in our case) all your looking for is somewhere to get a decent night’s sleep.
The hotel is conveniently located in a fairly quiet street a couple of blocks from the main strip, with most places in the city area within walking distance. We walked back to the hotel a couple of times after midnight with no issues, although there’re quite a few street sleepers in Montevideo. Good English spoken by front desk staff. Breakfast was basic, with only a couple of hot items. Free (slow) WiFi throughout, but a little complicated to connect to.

“Faded Four Star”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 November 2010

While the Lafayette appears to have been built (30? 40? years' ago) to 4-star standard, it is now out-of-date. But, still fully functionable. If you choose to stay here because it's the cheapest 4-star in town, you really have no right to complain about it. (Want better, pay more elsewhere.) Booked through agoda, LaFytte staff at check-in first insisted I had to stay in a room on the 2nd floor, one in front of the street and too noisy. Finally, they agreed to move me up to 6th floor and while the room was also on the street side, it had a new noise-blocking window. A comfortable sleep. strong, quiet AC. ok cable TV, but no news in English channel. free WIFI signal low, though, in room 606. Nothing noteworthy in furnishings, just basic. breakfast the only thing that could be justly criticized at the Lafayette. good, inexpensive laundry across the street, a block down on the left side. Location of this hotel excellent for downtown Montevideo.
