“Tryp Montevideo an Excellent Decision”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 March 2011

After struggling with where to stay in Montevideo, we chose the Tryp because of the excellent rate we got, its location and reviews of the hotel. We were not disappointed.

We had been travelling in Uruguay and arrived with our car rental. Thankfully we always found a parking spot right out front so we never had to enquire about the underground parking. Check in went well, staff were friendly and efficient and the bellman indicated that we had been given a very nice room. We had booked a standard room with king bed. Wow, when he opened the door I was expecting a typical hotel room but we received a spacious, very nice room with a golf course view off to the side. The room was large and the location of the hotel was extremely convenient. The hotel is 11 stories and we were on the 9th floor. Unlike many hotels, the wifi worked in the room which was terrific. No need to head for the lobby with my laptop.

Down the street a block away is Carrasco Shopping Center which is very convenient. The area of the hotel is very safe and in a relaxed neighborhood. I loved seeing the dog walkers in the morning. We saw one fellow on a bike with 10 dogs on leashes. It was quite a sight. Breakfast is served from 7:00 to 10:30 and is very extensive. We were quite impressed and the staff overseeing the restaurant were very attentive to refill items. There was a vast selection of fruit, pastries, cereal, yogurt and even hot items such as eggs.

Nearby are two very good restaurants, the "Francis" and "La Perdiz". Driving in Uruguay was not challenging and quite enjoyable but driving in Montevideo was somewhat more so and we were happy to park the car once it was dark and have two very good restaurants that we could walk to close to the hotel.

Without hesitation should we ever return to Montevideo, the Tryp Montevideo will be our hotel of choice.

“Great place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 February 2011

Even though the hotel is situated "far" from downtown, cabs to the city center are only 6-5USD, so as you can read, it is not a big deal (the rides are 5-8 minutes). And, after you see the hotels around the city center, you will be glad you are spending those extra 12 bucks per day.

The staff at the hotel is great. Except for the ones tending to the bar. The bar service is very sloppy and slow.

The breakfast is very complete. I read, previously that it was very "South American", and while i don't know what that reviewer meant. you will find more fruits and varieties of bread than in many other hotels in the world that offer complimentary breakfast.

“Modern hotel in Punta Carretas”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 February 2011

On the whole, a nice hotel, if a little bland, with only a couple of disappointment. It is in Punta Carretas, a prosperous suburb, with a beach and a big shopping mall nearby. The rooms are bright and airy, with minibars, good powerful showers, airconditioning and some have ocean views. There are also blackout blinds, double glazing and the beds are large. The double glazing kept out street noise, so I slept well here. Although the buffet breakfast was nice, the scrambled eggs and cooked food are best avoided, as the egg touching the bain marie was like rubber and the egg above was almost raw. I´d wanted to do a lot of sightseeing, so one of the hotel´s drawbacks was it was too far from the old town, about two miles. That said, it´s easy enough to catch a bus, or a taxi. The biggest disappointment for me was the hydropool on the roof. I understood it was a cross between a jacuzzi and a swimming pool, when in fact, it was more like a tiny children´s pool, with halfhearted jets spitting out tepid water. The hotel doesn´t capture any of the spirit of Montevideo, if that´s what you´ve come for, but it is efficient, clean and quiet. Definitely somewhere my parents would like.

“great spot!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2011

Before arrival, we'd worried the hotel may be too far from the key attractions, etc. Having spent two wonderful nights, it was an excellent choice on every front. The Punta Carretas neighborhood is a quiet, upscale residential area about a 5-10 minute cab ride (US$4-5) to the the old town. Opposite is a lovely golf course and it's two blocks to the largest and most modern shopping mall. The hotel itself is modern and classy with great service and a surprisingly good restaurant. The rooftop pool/spa, while smallish, is an excellent escape with a wonderful view. Would definitely stay here again on a return visit.

“Nice location but out of the city center”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2011

STRENGHTS: Location in rich, nice and safe area, close to the beach and seaside.
WEAKNESSES: Standard below many other TRYP Hotels.
Generally; The matter is the price you'll pay for that hotel. I've paid 120 USD which is reasonable price for it. If it'll be 160 USD for example rather try to find Radisson rates or any other hotel in Montevideo.
Location close to golf course and big Montevideo shopping center which could be advantage for someone
