“O.K. place to stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 December 2011

We stayed one night at the NH Columbia Hotel in room #411 where we had a view of the roof of the back of our building and a street with old apartment buildings and a few businesses-- kind of a shame as the the hotel is located right on the Rambla along the river front--but for one night it served it's function. It was nice to walk along the river front and from the hotel it was a short but slightly uphill walk to Constitution Plaza and the Cathedral. To walk to the Market area was an additional 6 blocks or so. Montevideo does not seem to offer a lot for tourists and we found that our one day there was plenty of time to see what we needed.

And actually the room was rather unusual as it was really two rooms joined by a roomy foyer. One room had a king-size bed, two armchairs, a desk and a television. The other room contained two quite low twin beds, a closet, 2 counters, another television, and a minibar. The bathroom located off the foyer between the two rooms had a shower/tub combination. My only major complaint was the overuse of Febreeze or a similar spray product in the room and the hallway outside (we were on the non-smoking floor).

The lobby provided two free guest computers but the internet connection was extremely slow. The breakfast buffet was very good except for the few hot items. My husband noted the eggs were burnt and the "sausage" were just those canned Vienna style.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a river view.

“Don't touch with a barge pole!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 August 2011

Pleasant enough reception and public areas at the hotel. We booked in at the restaurant, a table for 6. When we arrived they put us on a large round table set for 10 people, outside of the main restaurant, in spite of it the restaurant not being very busy all night. The waiting staff were inattentive in the extreme - not taking an order from the whole table. Our friend had to walk into the kitchens to find someone to place her order! When food did eventually arrive, our son had to wait 20 minutes for his meal. Needless to say we had all finished. There was not one word of apology. No manager was available but we were able to write our complaint in a book.
The rooms at this hotel did not have a 'clean' feel. Bed linen did not seem fresh and was not in good condition. To cap it all, Montevideo streets are awash with dog mess. Not much to recommend it really. Very surprised with hotel as NH are usually pretty reliable.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else!

“Bad location, credit card problems, decent rooms, nice view”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 June 2011

Although the view of the Rio de la Plata is attractive, the hotel is located on a very bad part of the Ramblas; it would be acceptable for business people doing business at the Port Authority or the container port or the BuqueBus terminal, but otherwise it is far from everything interesting or attractive. There is almost no one walking around there, even in daylight hours.

The green areas close by are populated by vagrants sleeping in cardboard boxes, stray dogs and there are dog feces everywhere (grass, streets, sidewalks). The old city is behind the hotel, but not very attractive. The buildings could be charming IF they were renovated, but they have not been. The hotel rooms themselves are quite adequate and the housekeeping staff was very pleasant and accommodating.

Within 24 hours of leaving the hotel and paying our bills with credit cards, BOTH my companion and I had fictitious charges posted to our credit cards. This is just too coincidental and we are totally convinced that the credit card numbers were "lifted" at the hotel as neither of us used our cards for any other expenditure in Uruguay. Frankly, we found nothing else interesting enough to buy, except food and drink, which we paid for in cash. The day-tour packages we bought were also through the hotel. Too much coincidence!

“Great view, moldy whiff”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2011

While the rooms looking out to the Rio de la Plata have great views of the river, ours smelled of mold (coming form the a/c), one armchair was broken and the bedlinens might have been washed but still had stains. Overall, I would not recommend the hotel although I am aware that probably many hotels in Montevideo are worse than this one.

“Near old town, but far from Pocitos / Punta Carretas. Expensive for what you get.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 December 2010

Located in the water front, in walking distance from old town and port area (good for day strolls, desert by night). Far from Pocitos and Punta Carretas, where most bars and restaurants are - but easily reacheable by taxi (5-8 eur). Comfortable bed but old bathroom and towels. Pricey for the services offered.
