Lonely Planet accurately describes this hotel as 'faded but friendly'. You can see that it's many decades past its prime, yet I suspect I liked it better for that. It was great value, in an excellent location and the staff were really helpful. We arrived with a bag of wet clothes, after our hostel in Ponta del Diablo failed to do the drying part of their wash and dry clothes in 24 hours service - despite having had them for 32 hours. The Splendido staff got them back to us both washed and dried within four hours.

I also loved all the old 30s and 40s furniture - which I suspect may have arrived at the hotel new...

Highly recommended budget choice.

We were pleasantly surprised by this place. Loved the high ceilings, and the bed was comfortably firm. It was like a palace after roughing it in Central America for a while. For this price you can't expect TOO much, so just don't. We just happen to find old buildings charming. The room needed some attention but was definitely clean. Fantastic location. Good wifi. A solid place to stay, and we'd come here again. Guys, if you want five stars, or four, or three and a half, don't stay here. But it was clean, safe, friendly, and good value for the money.

The location is perfect (in front of a beautiful old and luxurious theatre) and the hotel is wonderfull. An old place full of magic.
The staff is friendly, helpful and there´s a family atmosphere.
The hotel is cheap but high quality.
So, what else can I say? totally recommended

Splendido Hotel is definitely not as chique nor as elegant as their website would have you believe and so I could symphathise with those booking on line. They would possibly be disappointed.

However, it is a wonderfully safe and clean establishment right in the heart of Montevideo. You couldn't ask for nicer people running the place: helpful, obliging and with an eye for detail. Double with share or private bath for $US35 and $US45 per night respectively for each room might seem a little expensive, but that's the going rate in Uruguay. Plus there is a good wifi connection; neat and tidy kitchen; and common room at your disposal to. We were perfectly satisfied with what we got.

The only downside might be the noise from the bars and cafes on Bartolome Mitre. If so, ask for a room on the other side of the building.
