We had read all the reviews and decided to go for Splendido as the other super cheap 2 person room option in town (Green Hostel) had some pretty bleak reviews. We were really pleasantly surprised - super kitsch stylish decor throughout, 5-6m high ceilings and a perfect location make this a great choice. We arrived on Friday and stayed for 4 nights so got the full brunt of the weekend, Lonely Planet's two favourite bars are directly underneath the ho(s)tel but our room didn't look out onto the main road and with ear plugs we hardly noticed any noise. The staff were very helpful and all spoke good English, we booked online through a hostel site and got 1/3 off by doing so.

I knew exactly what to expect after careful research. I can see how some people get a little disappointed if all they did was look at the hotel's website. The website does give the impression that it's much nicer than it really is.

The hotel has hostel dorm accommodation, as well as private rooms. I had a private room, and I was very satisfied. Yes, the whole place has that "it's seen better days" look, but it's clean, the location is perfect, and the staff go out of their way to help.

Free wi-fi throughout. Good signal.

Despite being on top of some bars, we got a room facing a quieter street, which made for some nice nights. It is a mix of hotel and hostel, and we got a big room with midcentury modern furniture and a private bathroom. The staff were very friendly, and the free wifi internet was ok. The location was perfect - we could see Teatro Solis from our small balcony.

This hostel is very cheap - in every sense of the word.

We stayed here for 4 nights (with a baby) - and our room was right above a nightclub.

There's also not much around in terms of eating.

Good for young people who don't plan on sleeping much
