“Hotel for tour groups but with a little extra”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

I stayed here for two nights as part of a relaxed solo visit to the Sacred Valley, so had a fair amount of time in and around the hotel. The hotel was comfortable and friendly, but somewhat overrun by tour groups in the evening and early morning. One very good plus point was a helpful young man who made the wifi work on my computer: such personal service is not something I frequently encounter in my travels. Hot water in my room was a bit intermittent, maybe to do with the arrival of the tour groups.

“Beautiful views and peaceful atmosphere.”

We stayed here for one night in mid-December and were pleasantly surprised. The hacienda is beautiful and the gardens spectacular. We had two upstairs rooms with views of the valley and mountains that were quite breath-taking. No insect problems but as stated by other reviewers, the rooms are quite spartan. Lovely timber floors and timber finish on furniture. No problems with hot water and the showers gave out plenty of water; not always the case in South America. The street scape was a bit of a surprise. They were renovating the footpath and we had to pick our way through mud and stones to get through a little, dodgy-looking doorway before entering a gorgeous courtyard and seeing the hotel itself. There were little shops very close on the street for purchasing water and other supplies. Restaurant and bar service and fare were very satisfactory considering you are in the middle of nowhere really. We had some problems accessing the free wifi so the receptionist recommended we go and have a drink at the nearby Sonesta Posadas Del Inca Hotel and use theirs! This was worth it, not only for the wifi, but a look at another beautiful boutique hotel. Overall, we enjoyed staying here - clean, peaceful and a bit different.

Room Tip: Ask for an upstairs room on south side.

“Too many insects inside rooms”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2012

I was booked at this hotel through a private tour I was taking of Peru. I stayed for two nights. My expectations were pretty high after looking at the hotel's website. When I pulled up to the hotel, I became a little leery. The street view was a surprise. There was some sort of work going on with the sidewalk, but I'm not sure if this was temporary. Once you enter the property, it is really beautiful. The check-in desk and lobby is also really pretty, which made me hopeful about my stay. The rooms were a little more rustic than I anticipated, but it looked clean and the bathroom was modern.

I got settled in my room and noticed a spider on the ceiling. I didn't think much of it. I stood on the bed and killed it. I went for supper, which starts at 6 p.m. and had some delicious soup and chocolate cake. The hotel doesn't sell plastic bottles of water, so I bought two glass bottles of water from the restaurant to take to my room - one for drinking and one for brushing my teeth. The restaurant wouldn't lend me a bottle opener, so I asked them to pop the lids. When I was getting read for bed, I saw another spider on the ceiling and killed it, too. When I awoke in the morning, I went to take my bottle of water into the bathroom to brush my teeth. The surface of the water inside the bottle was covered with ants (~30). Somehow they crawled past the loosely placed metal lid and into the bottle. I promptly took the bottle back to the restaurant to exchange it for a clean one. I was getting ready to take a shower and shook out one of the towels on the rack and a spider fell out. The shower was good - hot water and good water pressure. The hairdryer in the bathroom was also a nice touch since I don't travel with one. While I was getting dressed, I noticed another spider on the bed where I had slept (I killed that one, too).

I really enjoyed the buffet breakfast in the restaurant. Pancakes were a real treat and a nice flavour of home. My tour guide asked about the hotel that morning and I mentioned the run in with insects. When my tour was done for the day, my guide asked the front desk if I could be moved into a different room. Staff were somewhat dismissive of my complaint, but assigned me a new room anyway. The room had just been made up by housekeeping that day. I got settled in and went to check out the bathroom. That's when I noticed a trail of ants on the showerhead. They seem to be attracted to water. I went to the front desk to ask if they could spray Raid or some other insecticide. The front desk was again dismissive, saying that I had to expect insects because it was the valley. There are insects where I live and I enjoy camping and the outdoors, and I'm aware there are ways to curb insect infestation. The front desk did get someone from housekeeping to come to my room with a can of spray to tend to the ants. He wiped everything down in the bathroom afterwards because of all the dead little critters. When I turned on the shower in the morning, a bunch more dead ants came through the nozzle. The shower drain wasn't very efficient, so I was glad I had water shoes with me to wear in the shower. I was happy with the lack of spiders in my second room, but I don't think there should've been any in my room in the first place.

Of all the places I stayed during my week in Peru, Casona de Yucay was the worst. A little pest control can really go a long way, regardless of where the hotel is located.

Room Tip: Ask for an upstairs room to avoid the noise from early morning tour groups.

“First impressions good... then a bit of a let down”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 December 2011

After spending four nights in the Amazon Basin in fairly basic conditions we were looking forward to hot showers and what our driver described as a "beautiful hotel"

La Cason de Yucay is indeed very beautiful with spectacular grounds behind the original hacienda dating from 1810. We were greeted warmly be the receptionist and showed to our room.

The room was basic with a double and single bed, all the basic essentials, en suite, safe, wardrobe, desk etc. There was no fridge or TV however this is not unusual in Peru we have found and not a major problem to us. No complimentary water.. available from reception at 5 soles a small bottle. Room furnishings are rather spartan and rickety (aka cheap) and the view from our room was quite a nice mountain vista spoiled by barred windows and a chain wire fence topped with barbed wire which reminded us of cell block H.

The major problem was the lack of hot water. The shower varied from scalding to freezing to no water at all in the short time it took my wife and I to clean up... and this definitely put a dampener (pardon the pun) on our opinion of the hotel.

Keen to relax over a glass of wine or two we found the bar which was welcoming with an open fire and comfy lounges and chairs. This was all good but the were no serving staff in evidence. After witing for five or ten minutes my wife went in search of some service and also made a complaint about the shower. She was offered a lame excuse about the gas hot water being unreliable in the rainy season. As there were fewer than 20 guests staying in the hotel at the time I would hate to think what hot water service is like when this place is full. No offer was made to attempt to recify this problem and the shower was similarly awful the following morning.

Eventually we got bar service and asked if the very loud music in the bar could be turned down a little. The barman then spent 30 minutes wrestling with the sound system during which time the sound came on and off at varying volumes a little like Chinese water torture.

Fortunately dinner was quite good. The restarant is warm and inviting and the maitre´d Caludio looked after us well. The menu is basic but comprehensive and the food quality was good. Breakfast was also satisfactory with all the usual offerings similar to other Peruvian tourist hotels.

Internet access is free and there is apparently free WIFI although I could not get it to work on either of our iPads.

Overall I am pleased we only stayed one night at this hotel.
