I was booked at this hotel through a private tour I was taking of Peru. I stayed for two nights. My expectations were pretty high after looking at the hotel's website. When I pulled up to the hotel, I became a little leery. The street view was a surprise. There was some sort of work going on with the sidewalk, but I'm not sure if this was temporary. Once you enter the property, it is really beautiful. The check-in desk and lobby is also really pretty, which made me hopeful about my stay. The rooms were a little more rustic than I anticipated, but it looked clean and the bathroom was modern.
I got settled in my room and noticed a spider on the ceiling. I didn't think much of it. I stood on the bed and killed it. I went for supper, which starts at 6 p.m. and had some delicious soup and chocolate cake. The hotel doesn't sell plastic bottles of water, so I bought two glass bottles of water from the restaurant to take to my room - one for drinking and one for brushing my teeth. The restaurant wouldn't lend me a bottle opener, so I asked them to pop the lids. When I was getting read for bed, I saw another spider on the ceiling and killed it, too. When I awoke in the morning, I went to take my bottle of water into the bathroom to brush my teeth. The surface of the water inside the bottle was covered with ants (~30). Somehow they crawled past the loosely placed metal lid and into the bottle. I promptly took the bottle back to the restaurant to exchange it for a clean one. I was getting ready to take a shower and shook out one of the towels on the rack and a spider fell out. The shower was good - hot water and good water pressure. The hairdryer in the bathroom was also a nice touch since I don't travel with one. While I was getting dressed, I noticed another spider on the bed where I had slept (I killed that one, too).
I really enjoyed the buffet breakfast in the restaurant. Pancakes were a real treat and a nice flavour of home. My tour guide asked about the hotel that morning and I mentioned the run in with insects. When my tour was done for the day, my guide asked the front desk if I could be moved into a different room. Staff were somewhat dismissive of my complaint, but assigned me a new room anyway. The room had just been made up by housekeeping that day. I got settled in and went to check out the bathroom. That's when I noticed a trail of ants on the showerhead. They seem to be attracted to water. I went to the front desk to ask if they could spray Raid or some other insecticide. The front desk was again dismissive, saying that I had to expect insects because it was the valley. There are insects where I live and I enjoy camping and the outdoors, and I'm aware there are ways to curb insect infestation. The front desk did get someone from housekeeping to come to my room with a can of spray to tend to the ants. He wiped everything down in the bathroom afterwards because of all the dead little critters. When I turned on the shower in the morning, a bunch more dead ants came through the nozzle. The shower drain wasn't very efficient, so I was glad I had water shoes with me to wear in the shower. I was happy with the lack of spiders in my second room, but I don't think there should've been any in my room in the first place.
Of all the places I stayed during my week in Peru, Casona de Yucay was the worst. A little pest control can really go a long way, regardless of where the hotel is located.
Room Tip: Ask for an upstairs room to avoid the noise from early morning tour groups.
