I have only positive things to say about Quinta Patawasi and the experience with Jim & family! I would definitely recommend this place to anyone travelling to Peru.
Our trip:
My friends and I spent 3 nights at this B&B last week, as part of a larger 10 day trip around the country. This was our first trip to Peru, and we wanted our experience in the Sacred Valley to be a memorable one. We are all ~29 year old professionals / grad students who have travelled internationally before, so we have a pretty good idea of what makes a place “stand out”.
* After our stay, we can safely say that Quinta Patawasi = awesomeness.
What we got:
* Lodging (very relaxing and pleasant place, just a few minutes walk from the town of Urubamba, with great scenery all around).
* Transportation (from Cusco Airport in Jim’s SUV; around the Sacred Valley in Jim’s SUV; to/from Machu Picchu via train & bus; return to Cusco via hired taxi).
* Meals (amazing breakfasts & dinners in the dining room complete with more fresh fruit / vegetables / ingredients than we’ve had in quite a while; lunch at fun local eateries when we were out on the road with Jim).
* Tours (knowledgable & fun local guides were arranged at MP, Pisac, Ollantaytambo).
* Logistics (entry tickets and train tickets to Machu Picchu were picked up for us in advance; Jim even printed our boarding passes for our return flight out of Cusco).
* Local wisdom (courtesy of Jim’s extensive knowledge of every place & person from Cusco to Pisac to Ollantaytambo).
* Great conversations (history of the area, memorable experiences with tours & guests, and lively debates on the proper translation of foods and plants in the region - hopefully Jim will now admit that we were right and chirimoya = custard apple!)
* A really fun experience...
Who we got:
Jim is great, friendly, helpful… everything positive that you can think of.
* He is originally from Arequipa Peru, though he lived in California for a number of years (and is a big fan of the Oakland As and SF 49ers, as his shirts will attest). For travelers from the US like us, he was able to provide the perfect balance of local flavor and worldly knowledge.
* Before the trip, Jim was very responsive by email as we had questions and as we were arranging our stay.
* During our trip, he was a fantastic host. Good stories!
* Special note: Late on the night before we flew into Cusco, we emailed Jim because one of our friends had altitude sickness / bronchitis and needed to go to a hospital upon arrival in Cusco. Jim met us at the airport at 9am, and he had already stopped by the local clinic to make sure the right doctor would be in when we stopped by. We can’t say enough about him doing that.
The rest of the Patawasi crew is wonderful too. Antuca (Jim's wife) was charming and was quite a pleasure to dine with every day. And Lucy & Roosevelt brought smiles to our faces and helped keep the B&B in tip-top shape.
Where we were:
The B&B lodge was very nice and comfortable. It was exactly what we needed, balancing out our time in big city Lima with a bit of a rustic feel.
* Rooms were good sized (the four of us had two rooms – each room had two comfortable beds, tons of warm blankets, dresser, tables, bathroom with good hot water).
* Downstairs was relaxing (living room with couch & chairs & Direct TV; dining room with ornate tables & wrought iron decorations; kitchen with pisco sour in the blender!)
* Grounds were beautiful (porch with a mountain view, garden & backyard with lots of flowers & plants).
* Pets were fun (two friendly dogs, four colorful parakeets).
Overall:
I’m planning to visit Peru and the Sacred Valley again within the next few years. And when I do, there is a 100% chance that I’ll be staying at Quinta Patawasi again. I can’t say any more than this.
