A blue door off the main road passing through Urubamba opens into the
paradise that is Kyuchi Rumi. This is not a stuffy high-end resort or
anything close to a hotel. It's a home away from home. Six small
casitas, each architecturally and artistically stunning, sit amongst a
bountiful garden protected by five sweet dogs. Each casita features a
fully functional kitchen, several comfortable beds, sitting areas, and in
our case, a work of art for a fireplace.
Our Casita had three levels and each window framed another breathtaking
glimpse of the Sacred Valley. From my balcony I could see ancient Inca
tombs as parrots flews overhead, and from my bathroom I could see fields
of Maize and beautiful stonewalls capped by mountain peaks.
The grounds feature an indoor group meeting area, an outdoor barbecue and
wood burning oven, a picnic table large enough for twenty people and a
circular ring of stones that would form the perfect gathering area for
meaningful discussion and sharing. This would be an ideal place for a
small group of people craving a connection with this beautiful valley.
Manca Inca himself would appreciate the natural flow and aesthetic
attention to detail at this little slice of heaven.
The location itself is ideally suited for exploring the Sacred Valley at
large, or resting up for or from a trip to Machu Picchu. The town of
Urambama is walking distance and features several shockingly good
restaurants. Moray, the Salt Flat of Moras, Chinchero, Ollantaytambo and
Pisac are all a short distance away.
The proprietors, Carlos, Claudio and Rodrigo, all of whom speak perfect
English, are beyond hospitable. Rodrigo went out of his way to make sure
we had exactly the kind of experience we were looking for and helped me
arrange parts of my journey. Claudio made us excellent breakfast
seasoned with rich conversation, and Carlos shared with us his enthusiasm
for his work and life in Peru. They are all three
traveler spirits and we truly felt like we were in a special place the
whole time we were there.
