“A Piece of Heaven”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

This hotel is ideally located at the base of Machu Picchu. It has an oustanding restaurant on the premises with a great staff. Loved walking through the orchid garden surrounding the hotel. Rooms are a bit small but very comfortable. The pisco sours are the best in all of South America. Machu Picchu is a must see for everyone. Truly inspiring!

Room Tip: We enjoyed the bottom floor with access out the sliding door to a wonderful patio area.

“expensive but worth it for convenience”

We stayed here for 2 nights and while it was a massive splurge (about US$800/night), it was amazing to be so close to the ruins. Our room (21) had a view of the entry gate and Waynapicchu mountain. The staff were all brilliant (very helpful and friendly) and the food was excellent. We booked online and unknowingly bought a package that included all food and drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) and in hindsight it would have been cheaper and better to just book a room and then pay for food and drinks as you go so check what you are booking. Many rooms were empty while we were there (it was low season) so I would have preferred to pay less than we did but apart from price, I can't fault the place. Great quality amenities (massage, luggage service, day room with TV and shower for after you've checked out, help with tickets) and they also have a jacuzzi that overlooks the ruins - amazing after a day of hiking. It stays light until quite late (7pm) at Machu Picchu so you can make use of the jacuzzi while it's still light - perfect for after you've been kicked out of Machu Picchu!). Even though it was wet season I would recommend going to Machu Picchu during Jan/Feb since the temperature is warm and there are less tourists. It rains daily but only for an hour or two around lunchtime so you can easily see the ruins before and after lunch with good warm weather and less crowds. Staying here meant you could get there before the crowds and stay after the crowds have left...well worth it. And being so close to the site you can easily come and go as you please from the ruins and freshen up in your own room as well as have lunch at the hotel (as a guest you can eat in the a la carte restaurant side as opposed to the buffet restaurant).

Room Tip: we liked 21 because you could see the entrance gate and Waynapicchu or ask for any of the rooms look...

“Room for improvement”

We stayed in the hotel for just one night on 5 January this year. It was very expensive and if not for its close proximity to the entrance to Machu Picchu, I would not have rated it very good. The room, No. 30, is very small and opens into a tiny garden without any view. It rained very heavily during the night and the sound of the rain was so loud that we could hardly sleep. The hotel staff are friendly enough. The Tampu Restaurant where we had all our meals during the stay is cosy. The portion of each dish is generous but not quite to our taste. Service during lunch (on the day of our departure) was slow and we found ourselves served the last despite being the first to place the order. Because the shuttle bus stop is just outside the hotel, it was very noisy.

“CHARMING STAFF”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

The atmosphere is of an African Safari Lodge - simple decor with taste. I agree with everyone who thinks it expensive but there will always be somebody to fill the rooms at the price and it is the only hotel at Machu Picchu. With a captive audience the Sanctuary Lodge does not rest on its laurels. The service is superb with young eager staff and the restaurant and bar very good.
My contact with Brezys Zavala the front office manager started in September 2011 and she was unbelievably helpful with my travel problems. Icannot praise both hotel and staff enough.

“Great Location, Great Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

This was the most expensive hotel we had stayed in so we has high expectations going in.

The location is fantastic. The entrance gates to Machu Picchu are only about 30 meters from the hotel entrance. Our room had a terrace which looked out on Wayna Picchu. Nothing better than breakfast on our terrace watching the clouds swirl around the mountains

The room, facilities and restaurant were all good. The staff were exceptionally helpful and really worked to make our stay perfect.

We had booked an all inclusive package so everything was included except for premium beverages. The pleasant surprise was finding that this covered laundry as well. We left, well satisfied with our stay, with all our clothes cleaned and pressed.
