I stayed at the El Balcon Dorado for two nights. My first night was after a late arrival flight (as most seem to be in Lima). The hotel was rather difficult to find as it has no exterior signs. If you are planning to stay here, there is a small entry between a bank and a bedding store where you walk half way up the stairs and knock. Luckily for me, I had informed the hotel of my arrival time and the staff had waited up and were keeping a lookout for me. They came and greeted me at the taxi and carried my suitcase up the stairs to me.
The hotel and the rooms are quite simple (I was informed they are renovating), but very spacious and there are small touches that make them very homey and comfortable. Breakfast is included, which is the usual Peruvian bread (very fresh), jam, eggs, juice and coffee or tea.
The absolute best thing about this hotel was the service provided by the staff (which appeared to be mostly the family). The owner of the hotel spoke very good english, and when he wasn't their the staff would call him on the phone to translate. Everyone that I encountered was extremely friendly and helpful. The owner provided me with more information and advice that I have ever had in a hotel. I did not have a taxi to the airport at the end of my vacation, and the young boy that worked there stood on the road with me for half an hour to get one, which was much cheaper than if I'd got it on my own (20 solos!)
The only negative thing I have to say about the accommodation was that the shower pressure and heat was quite poor, and the television didn't have an english speaking stations. However, the city location and the service well and truly made up for this!!!
