The decision to stay in the city center was based on our plan to take the train to Huancayo. From Hotel Espana the main station is only two blocks away, and nearly all the cultural sights in the city center area are in walking distance.
I have read many so-so reviews of Hotel Espana before but decided to give it a try and didn’t regret it. The hotel is a fascinating old colonial building with all the classic furniture in it. You might think that you are in a museum rather than a hotel. Furthermore there are some turtles and birds as house pets to enjoy
Prices are really moderate, we took a double room on the roof level for about 20 $. Breakfast not included. Unfortunately reservation by internet was not possible. There was no reaction on sending emails so I called the hotel a few days before from Arequipa and luckily someone was at the phone who spoke a little English and confirmed availability.
The double rooms are small but have all necessary facilities including TV. Wifi was working as well. Our room was not facing to the street but to the inner court of the roof level where the breakfast took place each morning. So it was impossible to sleep a little bit longer as we heard people talking while eating.
Staff was great, except an old lady which seemed to be the owner. Don’t expect any help from her as she doesn’t speak English very well and is only interested in your money and quite unfriendly. So better stay away from her. Quite handy is the travel desk: you can easily make reservation for any bus travel or trip in and around Lima from there.
All in all this hotel was a great and cheap basis to explore the historical centre of Lima and and a great choice for staying two nights
