I have just spent two nights at the Heliconia as part of any 18 day tour of Peru......
The rooms are nothing special although they are spacious, mine had a double and two singles in it and there is a big balcony with a hammock on it protected by mosquito netting across the entire balcony.....Actually mozzies were not as big a problem as they make out, I am the original mosquito magnet and if anyone is going to gets bites then it is me but I didn't get one!
The double bed is comfortable.....And the rooms are cleaned daily with fresh linen and towels.
The main thing about the place is the atmosphere, near total silence most of the time except for the sounds of wildlife, the occasional passing motorboat can just about be heard from the pool area, and in the morning for about an hour, and in the evening from 6pm until about 10.30pm there is the hum of the generator as there is no electricity...no mobile phone signal unless you walk half way down the steps to the jetty.....and no Internet!!
The staff are wonderful and so helpful and carry your bags without even being asked, something which is common in all Peruvian hotels, try getting a porter to take your bags to your room in England, or in Greece!
Limber the barman and waiter makes a great Pisco Sour too!
Food is all inclusive, three meals a day, because there is nowhere else to go, and they give you lots of fresh fruit and different fresh juices at every meal. There is no menu, they just ask you at the previous meal what meat you would like for the next one, and the serve up some exotic delights such as 'palm hearts'. The cookery is typical Peruvian and might not be Michelin 5 star but very edible....
Most people seem to be staying here for only two nights and there are all nationalities including Peruvians....After the desperate rush that you feel in Cusco and Lima this is a great place to go and just relax and really feel that you are on holiday at last, even the inevitable walk through the jungle and the boat rides to go fishing or to the distillery just down river are relaxing...
I didn't want to leave!
(PS there isn't a fitness centre...I guess they mean the pool)
Don't worry about air con, at night there is no electricity anyway, but the rooms are all well shaded by palm rooves and are quite cool at night....
And look out for Pedro, the house parrot, who I think is probably overweight as he never flies anywhere, he walks instead.
