Hi there, we are Jan and Anneleen, a Dutch couple on a South America trip. We are looking forward to the Inti Raymi festival which will take place here in Cusco within a week. We made a reservation in the Mirador hostel but have some small critics to take into consideration when you decide to stay here:
1. Good thing is that the location is very good, all the way up in San Blas but close to the Plazoleta San Blas. Good enough for basic backpackers like us.
2. We believe that service can be way better for the price you pay. The hostel is run by a local Cusco family. They do their very best to offer a good and friendly service, but we and another German couple had some strange experiences with them after all. About paying for the reservation and they didn't allow us to cancell our reservation after staying with them for 3 days. Anyway, we didn't bother much. After some small complaints they also upgraded their breakfast, without extra charge. Did get charged for internet.
3. One of the sons has his own travel agency inside the hostel. He is the only one who speaks very basic English. For a small favor he can be a good person to give you some first hand tourist information about Cusco. He arranged our trip to Machu Picchu, but after all he put us with a group of onother travel agency and we won't mention prices, but charged us a lot more than the common price.
4. We are used to sleep in very basic rooms, we don't need much luxory, but at least a room that got recently cleaned. We are pet lovers, but the hostel has several dogs and cats, that seem to get in the rooms every now and then. For us no problem, for others it definitely will be.
5. We are Dutch and stayed (a bit forced by the owners) for 7 days at the Mirador in San Blas, but didn't meet any other people from Holland or Belgium, as we were one of the only couples staying here. We did meet police officers several time who were investigating the owners for a robbery they seem to be involved with. We were not allowed to hear what it was all about, but were shouting very loud in Spanish (our Spanish is still basic) to the police at times. Bit strange.
Overall conclusion, Cusco is a great City. We will be staying here for 2 weeks in total. Our hostel coudn't ruin the fun, but we are now luckily staying at another place.
Happy travels!!!!
