Three of us (husband, wife, 14-year old son) stayed in Sumac Wasi for 5 nights (2 different rooms - 3 nights in one and 2 nights in another) in June 2010 and found it be conveniently located but very basic. It is in a charming old building, but it is very cold inside and the breakfast area was like a fridge (admittedly it was mid-winter). The beds are a bit lumpy and the first room we stayed in had no window outside - only a window to the corridor where people were walking past. Lighting in the rooms was dim and it always seemed to be dark and gloomy. Breakfast is included but very meagre - we were always hungry. However, it is very close to Plaza de Armas up a charming pedestrian lane, so it is very convenient. Staff were pleasant and friendly, but spoke very little English.

All in all it was OK, but a little overpriced.

This place was fantasic for our family of nine. We just wanted somewhere cheap and we found it. And the best part is that along with being cheap it was clean, the owner, Lourdes (I think that was her name) was super nice, and there was hot water...the most important !!! In the room we had a nice bed, cable TV, clean towels, mate on demand, and my only complaint is that the pillows were a bit hard..... They also watched our bags for us when we went to Macchu Pichu one day.....We arrived the first day and they made sure that we drank plenty of Mate and only laughed at us a little when we nearly passed out from altitude sickness. They recommended a chicken soup next door Chez Maggie and it was fab. The pizza in Chez Maggie is superb as well, dont know why, it is just extra yummy. At Sumac Wasi they are also working on opening the other courtyeard that they have, it is beautiful but in ruins right now but they are going to turn it into a BEAUTIFUL place !!! Cannot wait to see it !!! We paid about 10 bucks a night per person. The travel agents wanted to charge us about 100 bucks each per night for the same hotel...buyer beware!

This hotel is on Procuradores street; which makes it a little too convinient to things; Unfortunately this alley is known as GRINGO alley; so you will see people trying to sell you drugs, prostitutes, and possibly a fake bill if trying to do business here. The staff of the hotel and of the tour agency are very very nice. They help you with your bags; bring you coca leaf tea to your room. And help you answer with many questions. The hostel though is in below average condition. For S/.100 for a double with a bathroom I am not sure if its worth it. Our room beed was very uncomfortable; it was a queen size but it we were provided with twin sheets on this bed. The hot shower woked fine. The security did not feel great as it felt that anyone could open the door from outside. I had 2 days reserved here but decided to move out in one. The breakfast was pretty standard. Bread with Jam, vanilla milk, coffee and coca leaf tea.

I stayed 5 nights at Sumac Wasi in a single room. The staff was very friendly- they met me at the airport and drove me to the hotel free of charge, and served me coca tea in my room. The room itself was nice, not too small. It's in a 200 year old building with wooden doors and flooring. I really liked the old rustic charm, but it might not be everyone's taste. The bathroom was modern and looked recently renovated. Although sometimes there was no hot water and I had to take really cold showers. The room had a view of the inner courtyard, and there was free wifi internet. A small space heater was in the room, since it got pretty chilly. There's no AC, so it might get uncomfortable during the summer. The breakfast was really basic- bread w/ jam, yogurt and cereal. The location was the biggest plus- just a few steps from Plaza De Armas, the middle of everything. All of this made the hotel a great value in my opinion. It's a good option if you want a cheap room in a great location.
