“Central but quiet colonial building”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 August 2010

There are actually two Hotel Garcilascos in the same street. I think I stayed in no.2. Interesting colonial courtyard with old but clean rooms surrounding. There is wifi in the courtyard and lounge and a roaring fire at night.
Breakfast is buffet with lots of fruit which I appreciated.
The staff are very helpful and honest. I left my ipod in the lounge and it was returned to me the next morning.
I changed rooms because the first was a little musty probably not having been used for a while, the second was ok and I was plenty warm enough in bed. Plenty of hot water and a clean bathroom.
Location is great only a couple of blocks from the central square but away from the crowds. PLaza San Francisco is one block the other way

“An okay hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 May 2010

I stayed there as a solo traveler. On the first 2 nights, I stayed at room 102. It was cold, damp and noisy. I would wake up early mornings to the sound of scamperings (rats ??) from the roof or the room above me. After my trek, I stayed again for 2 more nights as this was the hotel pre-arranged by my travel agent. I was assigned room 105 which was definitely better, more modern, but so cold. I have a heater but it takes a while - 2 hours !! - before you can feel the warmth.
The hotel is okay - I only stay there to sleep anyways. But if you are planning to spend more time relaxing, I would recommend some other more comfortable and cleaner place.

“A good place to stay in Cusco”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 December 2008

Good location - just up from the main square, so near the action but you don't get all the noise from the main square. Give breakfast a miss and go somwhere else though!

Hotel Garcilaso

Stayed here for a total of 6 nights on 3 separate occasions within a 9 day period as part of a Tucan Tour around Peru.

The first room we were given was 104, it was poor to say the least. The bathroom was grotty and damp. It was cold and there was flaking paint on the walls. This room is on the ground floor, just off the central courtyard. It has a big window looking into a lobby shared by it and the next room. The curtain across this window doesn’t really cover it so there’s not a lot of privacy. In addition you can hear everything from the next room. When we turned off the lights to go to sleep, the ceiling light went on the blink; continuously flashing, there was no way we could have slept with that so we had to get up again and get someone from reception to have a look at it. The only option was to disconnect it; which required a ladder, unfortunately the ladder was in the sister hotel so the man assisting us had to climb on the wardrobe to reach the light while my husband held it steady. I was pretty relieved when the man had it disconnected and was back on the ground safely.

We told our tour guide about our experiences in this room and I think because of this we were given a much better room on our next stay. This was another ground floor room but down a corridor towards staff areas. This room was clean, fairly big, had built in cupboards with a full length mirror and no lighting problems! The bathroom was also fine; clean, no damp. Basic but nothing wrong with it at all. During this part of our stay we had laundry done by the hotel, it was very cheap but not at all worthwhile. Underwear came back grey, one t-shirt was shrunk and another changed from yellow to grey-green.

The last night we stayed here we got a room on the first floor, it was pretty similar to our first room but a little larger and a little bit better still not especially nice though.

Overall I would not recommend this place, there are other hotels which look a lot better and are in the same price range. A place like this, that is so hit and miss does not deserve your business.
