“Amazing location, brilliant service”

This is one of my favourite places in all of Peru.

You exit the highway and drive down a dirt road to a hotel in a very small bay. You may not even notice the Inca ruins as you enter. You'll find a simple but clean hotel. It has excellent views, a nice open-air restaurant and pool.

It's about this time you might discover the Inca ruins. They are everywhere, only 100 metres from the hotel, on both sides of the bay. The more you explore, the more you will find. It's another Peruvian archeological goldmine open for all to see and touch.

The service was fantastic. The staff really fussed over us. Our barman didn't start until around dinner time, so when we ordered an assortment of drinks, the poor staff came back apologetically and said they didn't know how to make any of them. Up steps one of the porters who proclaimed to know how to make a Pisco sour.

With a couple of pesos (50 cents) tip every drink, we had a very happy arrangement, and a good night was had by all. I even got gold-plated service at breakfast. I think my slight hangover was providing some amusement for the staff!

I am surprised the hotel doesn't have a better rating overall. It's remote and you need to adjust your expectations. If you want a full service chain hotel within easy access of bars and shopping, this isn't for you. If you want to stay over night in the middle of an archeological exhibit with fantastic local service, then look no further. Just brilliant.

Tip: Explore the north side (to the right as you face the ocean). It's hillier but some really interesting spots up there and alot less people go there.

Room Tip: A little generosity goes a long way here. The staff will do anything in their power to make sure you...

“Yes we were also there in a group”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 November 2011

We were in a group of 10 travelling around Peru and Intrepid put us here for 1 night. You have no alternative to eating in this "hotel" and it was ordinary, but with no ill effects as reported by others. The local ruins are interesting and the beach setting is good, although nothing spectacular. On face value this could well be an old tavern/cafe (available for the continuing beach camping trade) where it is now cashing in by offering alternative accommodation. This accommodation is a series of blocks of small, but adequate en-suite cabins scattered around the site. Appoached by a long steep dirt road, everything about the place (in Ocober 2011) was incomplete, struggling to cope, or being built. Open ditches with plank walkways, showers not operating in a number of units, very limited menu, plus dust or sand blown everywhere by the sea breezes. In heavy rain I cannot imagine the scene. Without major investment, it is also hard to visualise how the tavern will cope with growing demand. I imagine in many countries Hotel Puerto Inca would not be allowed to develop, or even operate, in this unsatisfactory way. As a staging post for one night with a group it was ok......if travelling independently check just what state the place is in and question if it is worth the journey.

Room Tip: One where the shower works.......those of us at lower elevations were better served.

“Worst hotel of my whole trip!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 October 2011

I spent three weeks in Peru and traveled part of the time with a group. I think we stayed here because there wasn't anywhere else to stay in the area, but it was terrible. Our tour group were the only people staying there, and apparently, we were a mighty inconvenience to the staff. My room mate and I (two women) were given a room far away from anyone else in our group (or anyone else in general) which was disconcerting, but so were all the bugs in the room. We opted not to have dinner, which was a good decision, because two of our group who did eat, got food poisoning. In the morning, we were told that since there were only fifteen of us, we would not be served breakfast (I guess fifteen people isn't worth the trouble) so we got some hard-as-rocks rolls, one tea bag each, and a little jam. One of our party who asked for a second tea bag was told, "No!" in no uncertain terms. I was so uncomfortable that I didn't ever trust the hot water for tea, and stuck to my bottled water.
Unless you have nowhere else to stay, I would avoid this place at all costs. The two people who got food poisoning were really miserable, and one required a doctor once we arrived in Arequipa.
The ruins were interesting, but no one alerted us to them; we happened upon them by ourselves. Keep driving!

Room Tip: I can't really advise about a good room, since I saw none; I suppose if you have to stay there...

“Not worth the 600kms drive”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 May 2011

My girlfriend and I hit the road for a 2 day getaway after we heard a few positive comments of friends and the really good pictures online.
Since most beaches on Peru's Pacific Coast are similar, we were hoping for something really spectacular after all that hype. We were also hoping for amazing facilities.
But none of these were worth the 6 hour drive. The beach didn't have nice clean sands and the water wasn't quite calm. And the facilities themselves were far from catching an architecture aficionado's attention.
Although the staff was very nice and service was excellent, their hours of operation were awful; we went for dinner at 8:00pm only to learn that the kitchen was already closed for the day. We decided to have some snacks and a bottle of wine that we brought over and we were charged a corkage fee. We were soon told as well that breakfast hours were between 6 and 9 am!! What kind of relaxing vacations would you expect with such schedule!
We were hoping for a 2 night stay but very early next morning we packed our stuff and returned to Lima.

“Great hotel at an amazing place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 March 2011

This hidden gem of a hotel is right on the beach at Puerto Inca and unless you have heard of this area you wouldn't know it existed. There's only the hotel here after a 10 minute drive from the main road. The hotel features a nice swimming pool, hammocks, outdoor gym area and an open-air (but covered) restaurant. Staff here were very friendly and most spoke English although the meal service was a tad slow. Rooms are a good size and have a toilet and shower. One small note: the piped water is salty - not to be consumed! Some of the rooms have excellent views over the bay. The beach is only a short stroll away. There are Inca ruins on each hill on either side of the bay and they are well worth a visit. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here and would recommend it to anyone travelling through this area.
