Hostal Las Mercedes is a lovely little place! Nice gardens, well maintained, quiet rooms, at least the ones on the rear side of the building. It is an old mansion with style, very nice antique furniture.
It is located an easy 10-minutes walk from the Plaza de Armas. The center of Arequipa with shops and restaurants is more on the other side of the Plaza de Armas, not too much near the hotel. They served us an excellent breakfast.
However, foreign languages are not spoken by the (very friendly!)hotel staff, as far as I could see, so communication may be a bit difficult without at least some basic knowledge of Spanish.
Excellent value for money. I can strongly recommend this charming hostal.
