Casa de Avila is located a bit off the city center but is still in good walking distance (5-10 min to plaza de Armas) so you don’t always need to take a taxi to go there. As it is not located in a narrow street with cars running by it is very calm and quiet and all the rooms get enough sunlight.
When we stayed there for some days we had 2 different rooms. One was on the ground floor and the other on the first floor from which you could easily overlook the beautiful garden which is an ideal chill-out place after a day full of sightseeing. Rooms were a bit small but nice with a hot shower, TV, a good bed and very good working Wifi
Breakfast is basic and consisted of bread, butter, marmalade and juices but for some extra Soles you can upgrade it quite well with fruit salad, eggs and all the other delicious things.
Reception was quite professional and good English speaking although I have to admit that I wouldn’t recommend to book a tour through the hostel. The city tour we booked was not the best, as it wasn’t a city tour at all. We just passed all the nice places in the city, but then went out of town to see places in which we weren’t interested at all and which even weren’t included in the price. So the choice was always “enjoy the nice scenery”=wait or pay extra money for the “sight”.
The other tour we booked was a 2 day Colca Canyon Tour. As my girl-friend couldn’t go by bus because of bus-sickness we needed to book a private tour which turned out to be very expensive in most of the travel agencies. As we explained our situation to the hostel, the receptionist offered us her help. We were offered a quite reasonable tour but driver, car and tour guide were all booked seperatly by the hostel. So the next night we ended up in waiting at 3.00 am pick-up-time, as our driver didn’t show up and nobody was reachable at phone at this time. Somehow the housekeeper still managed to organise our trip and it was really great in the end and absolutely worth every Sol/Dollar.
After returning from Colca Canyon we again decided to stay at Casa de Avila and were welcomed warmly. The reception realised that their Colca Tour organisation was not very professional and offered us a one of the best rooms for a normal price in return for our troubles. Great service!
All in all I really can recommend your stay at Casa de Avila!
