This hotel is located in a beautiful mansion not too far from the Plaza De Armas. I'd say it's within walking distance, but the staff advises that you don't walk through the local neighborhood for safety reasons. That's not a problem because taxi's are cheap and plentiful. The problem is that the hotel is located on the corner of a busy intersection and all of those taxi drivers honk their horns as they are approaching, crossing, or leaving the intersection. The noise didn't stop day or night and unfortunately, the din echoes through the rooms of the hotel. It was very difficult to ignore the noise at night (even with earplugs). The rooms were clean although the beds had a visible sag in the middle and the pillows were very thin. The hotel doesn't have wireless, but it does have a computer with internet access - the computer was broken during our visit. Breakfast included toast and tea. Eggs and fruit were available for an extra charge. The eggs we ordered never came. The fruit did make it, and was wonderful. The staff was very professional and friendly.

Just returned from a week in Arequipa. My stay at El Balcon was a truly pleasurable experience. At $43/night it is an amazing bargain. This small hotel is located about a 10 minute walk from the Plaza de Armas. Catching a taxi in front is extremely easy - the cost is less than $1.00 to Plaza de Armas.

This beautiful building was a private residence until its conversion in 1998. It was built by a physician in the 1930's. The carved wood balcony and woodwork leading up the stairs are remarkable.

The hotel is extremely clean, the beds very comfortable and the staff as courteous and helpful as can be. People at the desk all speak English well and can help with anything.

I highly recommend it.
